You don't dump 75K into a safe district in the last week if your over 50%   The Vet Vote ads could really help in this district with Hayhurst a MD and Veteran while Souder was a Conscietous Objector.   There is a wave building.

Here is the press release. Everybody keep fighting. The ground war is just starting for real.

Republican's October Spending Spree Dumps Over $300,000 into Perennially Safe IN-3

Fort Wayne, Indiana - Third District Congressional candidate Dr. Tom Hayhurst today labeled a $73,475 independent expenditure by the National Republican Congressional Committee as a sign of desperation.  The money has been dedicated to another round of television attack ads.

The NRCC's repeated polling and ramped up investments in negative advertising and phone banks, yet unreported, indicate a full-on battle to save Hayhurst's opponent, six-term incumbent Mark Souder.

The latest filing brings the total amount spent by the NRCC in IN-3 to over $228,000.  Since   October 1, 2006, Republican legislators and special interests have donated over $78,000 to Souder's campaign.  The $300,000-plus windfall outdistances Souder's own limited campaign fundraising efforts.

"In spite of the odds, our fundraising has outpaced Mark Souder's in every campaign quarter," observed Hayhurst.  "We put our opponent on notice.  His lack of concern for working families, his ineffectiveness and his broken promises mark him as a Hoosier gone D.C.  With a positive message and hard work, we have made it a real race.  But we knew that a competitive campaign would trigger an onslaught of outsider money."

A member of the Class of 1994, Souder pledged to term-limit himself after 12 years of service.  The religious conservative abandoned that promise, conveniently offering up various tortured explanations to rationalize his choice.  Facing his most serious contender since Jill Long in his first race, Souder's campaign has grown increasingly negative, including a recent round of mass telephone calls into the district underwritten by the NRCC, characterized by recipients as automated and putting them in direct violation of Indiana law.

"Because my opponent votes 96% of the time with House leadership and Republicans nationally are under siege, it is not surprising that the NRCC has turned one of their pet districts into a target for their slash-and-burn brand of politics," added Hayhurst.  "In this corner of Indiana , we call that trying to buy an election.  It smells of desperation.  This race is still competitive.  It should be decided by the people of northeast Indiana, not big-money political operatives trying to save a rubberstamping Washingtonian like Mark Souder.  We're David against Goliath, and we intend to win."

Dr. Tom Hayhurst is the Democratic candidate for Indiana 's 3rd Congressional District.  He is a medical doctor, Air Force veteran and currently serves on the Fort Wayne City Council.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Hayhurst a great candidate (2+ / 0-)

One thing I lament about Republican rule is how our good candidates - and Hayhurst is energetic, knowledgeable, popular, and dedicated - have been shoved aside in favor of the Souder of the world, who basically mouth the words "family values" and, that's it, nothing else needed, they're elected.

Oh, I forgot, $70,000 of badly needed funds to rename a  highway for Ronald Reagan.

If Sounder loses, I will be so happy.

Just look at all the Hayhurst signs that have sprouted up in Dekalb county.  I take that as a sign that Souder is toast!

  •  The best ad Hayhurst ran (3+ / 0-)

was the one about Souder wanting to put regan's picture on the dime and Tom ends the ad by facing the camera and say " It doesn't matter whose picture is on the dime if you don't have a dime in your pocket."
How about some love for Tom and the lawdog

  •  Souder is in trouble. (2+ / 0-)

A poll released earlier this week showed Souder at 52% to Hayhurst's 40%.  With independents breaking against Souder, and him dangerously close to 50% for an incumbent, this will be a close race.

I suspect that the numbers for Hayhurst were higher before the NRCC stepped in with $100,000 two weeks ago.

Remeber Souder won with 69% of the vote in 2004.  That's a 17 point collapse, and if it is generalizable to the neighboring IN-6, then Pence is toast.

An uncompleted poll in the 6th showed Pence well under 50 with a huge group of undecideds, this only had 187 response so there was a huge margin of error, but it was a random sample.

Souder said some disparaging things about Appalachians a few years ago.

I hope he gets his ahhhhhsssss handed to him.

    Blue Indiana! Believe it!

and I can still remember the giddy excitement when it turned blue for Ed Rausch. So it can be done!

I love the line about the dime. Later the Reagan-worshippers switched to a drive to replace Hamilton on the $10 bill, instead; but even that failed. I was so glad. I pictured myself, to the end of my days, handing back ten dollar bills to young cashiers and saying,

Do you mind? Could I have two fives, instead of that?

  •  The news tonight (0+ / 0-)

I watched the Evening News tonight on Channel 15 Ft. Wayne and I swear every commercial was from Mark Souder, the RNC or Dr. Hayhurst. Souder has to be sweating it or he wouldn't be paying for all those commercials.  The RNC needs to go bye bye, we don't need them funding commercials in IN-3.
