Colorado Confidential reporter Cara DeGette has been working on this story since it broke last night.
The allegations are murky. The motives for airing this story are murkier still.
The right wing radio show where self-described gay escort Mike Jones aired his info has been well-tracked by
Colorado Media Matters to advance bogus claims for ratings and notoriety.
The host, Peter Boyles, has a documented history of allowing guests to promote their own agendas through falsehoods and misinformation which creates a sense of veracity for the crooks, thieves, and miscreants on his show. Then, when confronted about it, Boyles will exclaim that he can't be blamed for the guests' lies.
Cara has written two stories today at Colorado Confidential which are on our front page.
I'd like to call particular attention to 9NEWS Explains Its Mike Jones Story.
Their reasons for broadcasting the story appear to be specious at best -- as in, we got beat by our own tipster and had to do something before we were accused of stifling this story to protect Haggard.
Cara has followed the religious right in the Springs for many years. She knows all of the players. Quite honestly, Haggard and Dobson are not exactly allies. That Dobson would defend his rival for the crown of national evangelical powerbroker is fascinating. He would just as well throw Haggard under the bus.
But he's not. That is very meaningful to the potentially truthfulness of this story.
That doesn't mean that we should treat the religious right with kid gloves. Let's send a clear and unmistakeable message to the theocrats while maintaining the high road.
Jay Fawcett in CO-5 needs to raise $30K for last-minute TV ads to defeat the Club for Growth's waterboy, Doug Lamborn.
Lamborn, who is backed by Dobson, et al., is lying through his teeth about Fawcett's positions. Some moral values, eh?
