These are people with serious demons. They have decided to move their psychological problems into the political arena. They have feelings and desires that they believe to be wrong so they bring that self-condemnation into the political arena. They can not control themselves so they create political positions and legislation to control others.
Our glorious nation has been held hostage by the internal battles of unstable people. Bush is the most mundane of psychodramas: he's got bad boundaries and he is always baiting someone to draw the line. But we are all trapped in it. The spoiled baby trying to get his busy and important father's attention. Okay George, we hear you! No you cant do that George it nots right.
Look at Haggard, the long blinks, the looking away, the cagey partial admission. He has preached the depravity of the soul and condemned those who do not live by his standards. This is all an internal conversation of tortured self-loathing writ large on our political process. Their demons become everyone's demons because they have made their private lives public in the most dishonest way possible. Of course their torture is sexualized.
This is not so much a rant but a simmer to slow boil. I thought I had peaked with my emotional investment in this election. But this latest story has really brought home just how much the disturbances of the powerful impact everyone else. Over and over and over again and in every realm from foreign policy to civil liberties. These demons must come out. Revulsion is not the most positive of motivators but I can't stand the thought of these demons continuing to wield so much power over us. Oh god please cast out these demons on November 7.
