OK. It's November 3rd. T minus 4 days and counting.
This post over at Gilliard's got me thinking....
Let's review all the Republican/conservative malfeasance of the last two years--just since the 04 election. I want a comprehensive catalog of people who are going to jail, face legal jeapordy, have lost their jobs, etc. And I want links too.
I'll get it started, and if I miss any, or if there are some nifty links that I left out, add them in comments. Here goes....
*
Ted Haggard--preacher accused of sex with gay hooker and buying meth
* Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL)--resigned in September 06 after behavior with male Congressional pages revealed; apparently an open secret among Republican Congressional leadership for years (see next item); was deputy whip as well as Chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children (I am not making this up)
* all of the following are implicated in covering up Foley's crimes: Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL), Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH, Tom DeLay's replacement), NRCC Chair Tom Reynolds (R-NY), Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), Rep. Sue Kelly (R-NY), RNC Chair Ken Mehlman, House Clerk Jeff Trandahl, and various staffers, including Kirk Fordham
* Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX)--resigned in June 06 after being indicted for money laundering; implicated in ever-expanding Jack Abramoff scandals
* Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH)--pled guilty to corruption charges Oct. 13 2006; connected to Abramoff; as luck would have it, he officially resigned from Congress today
* Jack Abramoff--notorious lobbyist so crooked that Wikipedia has a whole category for him; see also Mitchell Wade and Brent Wilkes
* Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-CA)--sentenced to eight years in prison for bribery; longest prison term ever for a Congressman, according to this article
* Rep. Don Sherwood (R-NY)--allegedly choked ex-girlfriend, and is in the middle of paying $500,000 in hush money to her--half now, half after the election
* Rep. Curt "Able Danger" Weldon (R-PA)--under investigation by the FBI for nepotism, corruption, and possibly illegal contacts with Russian and Serbian underworld figures
* Rep. Jim Gibbons (R-NV)--under investiagion by the Las Vegas police for allegedly assaulting a waitress in a parking garage
* Rep. John Sweeney (R-NY)--wife called 911 in domestic dispute; neither party has disputed specifics of allegations
* Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA)--according to local news, used taxpayer-funded staffers for campaign activities; snatched documents from a reporter on camera (I am not making this up)
* David Safavian--former OMB official; convicted of making false statements and obstruction of justice October 27, 2006; sentenced to 18 months
* Claude Allen--former Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy; convicted of shoplifting (actually returns fraud) August 2006; avoided jail but was fined, placed on probation, and ordered to perform community service; was once a nominee for US 4th Circuit Court of Appeals
* Scooter Libby--former Chief of Staff for Dick Cheney; indicted in 2005 in the never-ending Valerie Plame scandal on 1 count obstruction of justice, 2 counts making false statements, and 2 counts perjury
* Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN)--under investigation for insider trading, related to his family's ownership of HCA
Whew. That's quite a shit list. Did I leave anybody off? Seems like I forgot a preacher or two....
Update:
* Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT)--took more money from Abramoff than any other Senator, although he has apparently given it all to charities; some charities refused the money, saying it was tainted
* Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA)--as Chair of House Appropriations Committee, has awarded earmarks to clients of his good friend Bill Lowery, who in turn have donated $$$$ to Lewis' campaign and PAC; connected to Abramoff
* Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA)--under investigation for contacts with Abramoff & Wilkes
* Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ)--under investigation for a shady land deal among other things; also received tainted money from DeLay's ARMPAC
* Gov. Ernie Fletcher (R-KY)--was indicted for state hiring practices (1 count conspiracy, 1 count official misconduct, 1 count political discrimination) of only hiring Republicans to official positions; charges were dropped because the prosecutor felt it likely that the Guv would pardon himself (!!!)
* Gov. Bob Taft (R-OH)--convicted on four counts of receiving gifts from lobbyists; will not be impeached because the Ohio Legislature is controlled by Republicans; approval ratings are at a whopping 6.5% according to Zogby; see also Tom Noe
And here's a handy graphic from the WaPo about Abramoff.
Update 2:
* Virgil Goode, VA-05
Took over $90,000 from MZM and Mitchell Wade (see Randy "Duke" Cunningham). "returned" the money by giving every animal shelter and volunteer rescue squad in his huge and mostly rural Virginia district $200+! Pressured the city of Martinsburg into guaranteeing grant money from the state for MZM to locate a facility in the city--a facility to do the work for a DOD contract that DOD didn't want and which ultimately closed. Martinsburg is still waiting to find out how much they will have to repay the state of Virginia for this "favor" from Goode. [H/T edgery]
* Ralph Reed--he of Christian Coalition fame; rap sheet too long to enumerate (the Wikipedia article is extensive--Reed's multifarious malfeasance goes back to the 80s); most recently lost Republican primary for Georgia Lt. Gov.; connected with the ubiquitous Abramoff
And here's a link to TPM's Grand Old Docket page. [h/t bluerevolt]
*Grover Norquist--Grover is justly infamous for some of the most arrogant statements ever made about American government ("bipartisanship is date rape", "I want to shrink the federal government down to the size that it can be drowned in a bathtub") and worked hand-in-hand with convicts like Abramoff and Michael Scanlon, as well as will-be convicts Reed and Karl "Turdblossom" Rove. Anti-tax jihadist Grover is involved in all sorts of exciting things, including a public spat with wingnut Frank Gaffney (himself no saint) that apparently was hushed up in private
* Steven Griles--there's also this guy, who had numerous conflicts of interest as Deputy Secretary of the Interior and resigned just after the 04 election to go make more money working for the same clients he had before he held public office; oh yeah, he's connected to Abramoff also
