This diary is the first test of a diary designed to allow newbies, lurkers, visitors, and veterans to have a means of locating all diaries about races they are interested in.

Each state listed in the first section will lead to a general state link plus a list of races for that state. Please test all you like and add comments where I may have missed an important race.

I have listed all Congressional races, Statewide races that include Governor, Senator, Lt. Governor (where a separate race exists), Attorney General, and Secretary of State.

The final links will take you to an etag search for the race you want.

I am posting this today unfinished to retain my diary for Saturday. I will delete when the bugs are fixed and ready for another functional test.

With all due respect to Jotter and our site's excellent staff the diary search is not user friendly enough for first those who aren't familiar with the site. So please recommend this so the next versions so they will be available for the rush that will come between now and Tuesday.

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

I wanted to get this up on Friday (my time anyway) so that I can post a new version on Saturday after testing.

I had it all the way up to North Carolina when I posted it.

The diary stopped at Nevada and there is an error that is keeping me from editing or updating the diary.

I will send a note to whichever front pager is on duty.

Several reports in the last 24 hrs.  I haven't personally tested it, but 'Contact Us' / 'Tech Support' would be the place to start if it's real to you.

        "The diary stopped at Nevada"

There is a limit to diary space of like 32 or 64 K text.  The way around it is to put some of your content in pre-setup comments.

This diary of mine illustrates the technique.

but was deterred by the giant size.

In fact, that was one of the reasons I developed the etag addition to search.

I do think it would be nice to have prepackaged searches, so you don't have to know how to use search, just click on your state and race of interest, but that's a site UI perogative since we can't script in diaries.

You can work around the size limits using the method described by ek, though you'll lose the state redirects.

Returning to the problem this diary seeks to address, perhaps there are other means to make  the search friendly enough for those not familiar with our site.

I would welcome any such suggestions.
