I no longer think voting is enough. After seeing what Republicans have done to our country I decided I had to do more. I called the Dan Seals campaign and spoke to Jeremy. He said to meet his group today at 9:30am at the Wheeling Democratic Township office. I went to the Democratic Headquarters for my township to find a number of people waiting for the office to open. They were either fighting mad or disgusted.
A 74-year old woman complained that somebody stole all the Dan Seals yard signs from her neighborhood overnight, so she came back to get more.
An older man in his sixties was so fed up with the Republicans he could not talk without pacing back and forth in the hallway. The only person that showed up was the committeewoman. She had said Jeremy had worked out of the office for some time, but did not know if he would be in today.
I told her I was there to knock on doors for Dan Seals and I wanted a list of registered Democrats. She tried to access her computer, but forgot the password. So she went in her car and gave me enough literature to hit a hundred or more houses.
I spent two hours going door to door in my neighborhood. "Hello, I'm your neighbor and I am supporting Dan Seals and I want you to vote for him too."
I found people were either happy to see someone from the Democratic Party or were completely indifferent. Even people that were happy did not want a yard sign.
The high point came when I bumped into another couple who were passing out the similar literature. They had attended a real meeting the night before and were given names and addresses of all the Democrats in the neighborhood. They were surprised I was knocking on every door. They surrendered some of their literature because it was superior to mine and we parted ways.
All in all, it was a good experience. Even the light rain did not bother me, and it gave me the opportunity to learn more about my neighbors.
