The
Washington Post is reporting that Dick Cheney is going hunting on again -- on Election Day. Watch out.
WASHINGTON -- Vice President Dick Cheney will spend Election Day on his first hunting trip since he accidentally shot a companion last February while aiming at a covey of quail on a private Texas ranch.
The vice president, after working at the White House on Monday morning, will head to South Dakota to spend several days at a private hunting lodge near Pierre. Lea Anne McBride, his press secretary, said it was an annual hunting outing and said Cheney spent Election Day in 2002 at the same lodge.
Not being familiar with the races in South Dakota, I googled and found that the state's one congressional seat is currently held by Democrat Stephanie Herseth, who is solidly ahead in the
Zogby polling.
So far, that is. But Dick isn't loaded yet.
Stephanie Herseth, who ran for the same seat in 2002, has maintained a healthy lead over Republican Larry Diedrich. But Diedrich has been able to cut the gap in half - despite his "unfamiliar" rating of 48 percent - in the seven weeks since the last poll on the race was publicly released.
Herseth leads Diedrich 53.3 percent to 37.1 percent, according to a poll of 501 likely voters conducted last weekend by Zogby International of Utica, N.Y., for South Dakota media outlets, including the Rapid City Journal. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percent.
Now, I'm not saying Mr. Cheney has purposefully chosen this district for his Election Day hunting trip. I'm simply suggesting some girl-to-girl fashion advice. That is, perhaps Ms. Herseth might want to consider dressing in a nice bright, bright, bright day-glow orange suit for any of her appearances on that day.
And, if Mr. Cheney should stop by for a surprise visit, Rep. Herseth should stand well behind him. And to the left.
When the races are close and it's this late in the campaign, you can never be too careful. Just sayin' ....
