Like all of you, I am nervous and excited wondering about the results that will come tonight. I like to believe in reason and logic, yet I am also very superstitious. Thus, I believe that good luck can come in surges, so that when you're lucky in one regard, you're lucky in another. Now, what do I hear as I come out of the shower today? My friend in my Muslim history class calls and tells me that she just checked her e-mail and that the second midterm meant for today is going to be given as a take-home. And that's how I know we are going to win.
In all seriousness, I'd like to say two things. First, I feel our chances our excellent. Barring a mass extinction of Democratic voters on the way to the polls today, we are almost certain to take back the House. The Senate looks likely, even if it's by a small margin. We are in this position because we--but certainly more the majority of the posters here more than posters like me, and certainly people like Rahm Emmanuel and Chuck Schumer--did almost everything right: the fundraising, the selection of candidates, the tough campaigning. The success we will have tonight was certainly influenced by the Republican implosion on several fronts, but at the same time, a party that does not bring its A-game will still be left in a position of weakness no matter how awful the opponent is. Second, as much as we might like to rest on our laurels, we absolutely cannot do that. We should double our efforts for the next election cycle, making sure we are competitive in a far greater number of states. For even if we do not win in Texas and Kentucky, for instance, in 2008, the fact that we tried means that we will be in a greater position of strength for future races. Let's remember this as we break open the booze tonight.
