What's the matter with Kansas?  A whole lot less than there used to be.  Welcome to purple Kansas.

Democrats won three BIG victories last night:

Governor, Kathleen Sebelius trounced her Republican opponent:

D-Kathleen Sebelius     475461     58 %
R-Jim Barnett             335676     41 %

New Democrat Paul Morrison destroyed wingnut, abortion-rights foe Phill (who spells Phil with two Ls anyway?) Kline:

D-Paul Morrison     474893     58 %
R-Phill Kline    340250    42

And in the biggest shocker, Democrat Nancy Boyda ousted Wingnut and Mark Foley neighbor Jim Ryun:

D-Nancy Boyda     111734     51 %
R-Jim Ryun    104103    47 %

More in extended...

A few thoughts on what this means:

1) Sebelius

She just became a serious front-runner for Veep in 2008, provided our nominee is one w/national security experience.  She certainly just made it likely she will be able to head to the Senate, either by taking Brownback's seat in 2008 when he runs for Pres. or Roberts in 2010 when he retires.

2) Attorney General
Along with the SD initiative, this was the big victory for choice.  Phill Kline has made it a priority to destroy abortion rights in KS and made it clear he will be among those seeking to send cases to SCOTUS to overturn RvW.  Its clear Kansans have said they don't like extremists on this issue.

3) Boyda, Boyda, Boyda
Me and a few other Kansas Kossacks have been posting this race everytime it was asked who else we should be supporting.  Yet, this was not a top priority race for the netroots, the DCCC, the DNC, really anyone.  Despite the fact that Boyda is a chemist/scientist (we need some of them in the House!) by trade and is genuinely progressive.  The fact that Ryun is a genuine wingnut makes this even sweeter.

Oh, and perpetually endangered KS-03's Dennis Moore won handily, hopefully freeing him to not vote so conservatively (he was one D with a 'pass' from Pelosi to preserve his district).

This is a huge night for Kansas Democrats.  It was the best spanking the wingnut KS GOP has ever had, and they've had plenty.  True to form, I predict they'll lurch even further in to wingnut territory next election, hopefully providing even more Dem victories.

IN Kansas, Dems are the grown ups, the responsible party, the people who will make decisions based on the facts and what moves our state forward.  That's a good place to be as a party.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    This is so great!

Jim Ryun has held that seat for far too long and not represented his constituents well.  His "famous" name (from track star / running status) helped him in the past, but finally, Kansans were FED UP with 'holier-than-thou' creationists and deniers of reality in general.

Huge. Boyda's win is just HUGE!

Thank you Kansas! (This was my home district when I lived there. I sent Boyda $100, which really strained my wallet.)

is a brilliant brilliant woman!  VP isn't good enough.  If she doesn't want to run for President, perhaps she should hook up with Howard Dean and help turn the rest of America BLUE!

Thanks for your work. You kept us up on Kansas.  Boyda!  Wow, was that one of the two joyous shockers (Carol Shea-Porter the other)!

What's frustrating is the DCCC abandoned her in 2004 even though she had a solid shot at ousting Ryun then.  (The GOP poured a million dollars, a lot of money in Kansas, in at the last minute in 2004 to save Ryun).

Its also interesting that NONE of the networks had this on their lists of possible pickups even though Boyda was solidly ahead all night.

      Bush will be impeached.

was on my donations list, too. I found her from across the country when I was searching for a place where I could take a bite out of my dad's wacky Republican voting ways in that area. Haven't talked to him yet this morning....

Great day for Kansas and Missouri.

  •  Blue Iowa (0+ / 0-)

    Congrats on the Purple Kansas.

Just slightly OT, but Iowa is bright blue now:

    1 Dem Senator
3-2 Dem advantage in the House
    Dem Gov.
Dem State Senate 29-21 (was 25-25)
Dem State House 54-45 (was (49-51)

    What an amazing night!

come out with a new book entitled "What is the matter with Kansas?"

I think the problem lies in the extermism of modern day Republicans, which forced mdoerate Kansas Republicans into the Democratic Party.  Let's keep those voters and cadidates!  Go Kansas!

You know why? Because that's not just Kathleen Sebelius, Governor of Kansas, you're talking about. That's John Gilligan's lil girl Kathy, from Cincinnati, aka an Ohio democratic governor's kid who will easily surpass her father's political accomplishments. Talk about getting the heart of the red voters back into the dem fold- what a candidate she would make!

As a native of Seattle and relocating to Kansas about 2 years ago, I am pleasantly suprised. I was dancing on my couch when the race was called for Boyda. It was a huge boost to have Morrison elected as AG. Of course, I already knew that Gov. Sebelius was a treasure =)

    Thank you, Kansas!!!
