A few days before the election I posted a
Gloating Guide for the Senate, considering the range of possible outcomes, to help my fellow Kossacks better prepare for today's important task of rubbing the Republicans' noses in their crushing, historic, and humiliating defeat in the Senate.
The Guide was not well received at that time, perhaps with good reason. But I offer it once more, in this improved climate, and tailored to the actual result, which was a pickup of 6 seats.
updated Guide after the break...
Gloating Guide 2006: Senate
Only the second time since 1918 that a second term President has lost the Senate ( also 1986 ).
Largest loss of either party's elected incumbents in 20 years ( see 1986 ).
Republicans just lost as many elected incumbents as Democrats did in the last 6 Senate elections combined, including the landslide year of 1994.
Santorum is first member of Republican Senate leadership to be defeated since 1972.
Santorum is only the second member of Republican Senate leadership to be defeated since 1934.
Democrats now hold a 17-5 advantage in the Northeast, continuing a steady 50 year reversal from 1956 when Republicans held an identical 17-5 majority.
Just 2 terms later, only 4 out of 12 Senators from the Republican class of 1994 remain in office (Kyl, Thomas, Snowe, Inhofe).
