Well, we should know today what Gary Trauner is
going to do. A lot depends on Carbon County. Results are still not complete, but it's hard to see him making up the difference. Trauner's results there were not as expected, Gov Dave took that county with 58.4% of the vote in 2002 and from what I heard it's only become more Dem since that time. Voter turnout was higher in the state overall, but appears to be lower there. None of these things suggest any fraud or error, but they are curious.
Once all the analysis is done and we start to see why Trauner came so close, but appears at this time to be short, I think we'll see that a large number of Republican and Independents in Wyo just couldn't vote Dem and for Pelosi. She has been made out to be a pinko in this state.
Wyoming Republicans also put their party above the state. Barbara Cubin was ineffective when Republicans were in control and now she will be even less effective in a Democratically-controlled House. If Trauner were elected, he would have had a decent amount of clout for pulling off a long shot bid in a red state. Cubin will be in the office for two years until she retires or loses the primary. She will not be the candidate in '08 because the opposition to her in the Republican Party will make sure of it. These next two years will be a big loss for Wyoming if Trauner can't close the gap.
Like Kos, I see the election as a bittersweet moment. I was heavily invested in making great gains in the Mountain West with people like Trauner, Fawcett, Grant, and Kleeb (technically not the Mountain West I know). Tester is in and that makes me happy. Trauner and Wyo Dems did make a huge impact though and for that they should hold their head up high.
