Well, maybe not the war, but we've just signed a trade deal with Viet Nam. The importance of this event is that trade was really our objective in both the Korean and Viet name wars, not democracy.
Anyone who doesn't understand this just needs to look at Communist China. When China considered actually liberalizing their economy and empowering unions so the working class would be able to fight for their own rights, the multi-national corporations then had a fit and told them they wouldn't continue to invest in China if that were the case. So much for trying to establish democracy in Asia.
The truth is that the investor class just wanted to set up a capitalist system in place of a socialist system. Well, after 30 years of PEACE this has been accomplished! Granted, it took twice as long as the Viet Nam war, but it was at no cost to us in lives or treasure.
So, the lesson to be learned is that the country in which we lost the war, Viet Nam, is the country in which we have accomplished our objective. And the country in which we won the war, Korea, is the country in which we are at an impasse with to this day, 50 YEARS later.
So let us recognize that WINNING THE WAR and ACCOMPLISHING OBJECTIVES that are in the interest of our country are sometimes not the same thing.
If we learn this lesson we may be able to apply in regard to Iraq.
