By now we've all heard that Sec Rumsfeld is going to resign, and that Bush will nominate Robert Gates to take up his post. I'm sure many have already seen some of the negative stuff coming out about him, and how he's already been rejected for federal office several times in the past. If not, go here:

Anybody think the Dems will pass him?
Let's just say, they better not, but let's asssume that their victory will reinvigorate their spines, and they'll reject him . . . which leads me to wonder why?
There's more . . .
Why would Bushco nominate someone that has failed to pass muster several times to a Senate that has just been taken over by his opposition party?
Perhaps this is the way to test the waters and cow the Senate early on, by forcing through an odious canditate?
Perhaps bushco expects the rejection, so that they can say: "See, they've been calling for change, and won't change!"
that's a fair strategy, but i think the real outcome they desire is for Rummy to stay in the post for the last two years. he will already be stayin on as SecDef until the replacement is confirmed, which won't even start until next year. so, perhaps their looking forward to a long, drawn-out battle where rummy can stay on in his post while things are battled out in Congress . . .
stranger things have happened.
