According to the
NY Times, the Defense Department is basically considering ignoring the Supreme Court's decisions:
The Defense Department repeated that view on Thursday, asserting that the court's sweeping ruling against the tribunals did not undermine the government's argument that it can hold foreign suspects indefinitely and without charge, as "enemy combatants" in its declared war on terror,
and
Officials may soon begin to look harder for an alternative site for the detainees held at Guantánamo Bay.
This is a terrifying development, indicating that the Bush Administration sees absolutely no control on their government. It shouldn't be surprising, given the numerous power grabs, the Unitary Exectuive Theory, the signing statements, the refusal to abide by FISA, the attacks on the press, but every time I think I've lost the ability to be shocked, they find a new way!
And so Democracy dies, not with a bang, but with a whimper, and most of the country changes the channel to vote for America Idol, as our hearts break. I feel like a character in a Chekov play, watching my life as I know it fall apart and not knowing how to stop it.
