It was inevitable that there would be a question after the election of exactly what sort of policies the voters have "voted for". The fact is, they did not vote for particular policies, but for people, and change.
And that is good enough, because all that matters is if a policy actually works. We do not have to worry if the American people will like our policies philosophically, we do not have to ask if a policy is "too liberal" or even "not liberal enough", we have to ask only, "will this policy work?"
If a policy will work, it will help you get reelected. Progressive policies work. It is as simple as that.
For example, when we finally get national healthcare in this nation what will determine if the founders of that system get reelected is
if the system works. If the system works, there will be thousands of life and death stories with happy endings. Conservatives whose aunt survives will support that system.
And so it is with all progressive policies, we shouldn't ask, "do the conservative Dem voters like this idea"... we have only to ask "will it work?".
Progressive policies do work, they work directly, not by coming from good intentions, not by having a status as "good" or "noble", but by directly applying to social infrastructure. Jobs programs fill jobs, the jobs are productive, their output is beneficial, the benefit is direct.
National healthcare will statistically improve the national health, that improves the creativity and productivity of the American worker. Strengthened education...? productive. diplomacy? productive.
Progressive policies are about stronger infrastructure... a political party can only be about such things with progressive policies. Progressive policies are about fair play, and fair play leads to opportunity... the nation becomes stronger by increasing its own sum opportunity. Sober leadership in the world, not shooting from the hip, leads to sober action, less mistakes, and more efficient progress, more efficient growth, a more robust system, a stronger system.
That's what matters.
