Led by Sam Brownback, the Religious Right is making a last ditch attempt in these lame-duck days, to bring a vote to the senate floor on the Public Expression of Religion Act (PERA) -- a measure the House approved 244-173. They have gotten the word out to their list-serves asking the "troops" to contact their senators, urging them to allow a vote
According to www.stoptheaclu.org, "It is rumored that the Senate will not take this bill up for a vote but that can change if YOU contact Senators Specter (who is purportedly against the bill), Frist and your two U.S. senators"
PERA would eliminate the awarding of attorneys' fees to groups that challenge religious displays on public, making such challenges difficult to mount.
Though a little noticed piece of business, it's an important one. It's also an example of how treacherous legislature slips through the cracks.
Take Action Now: In our most powerful grassroots way, let's contact Sens. Specter, Frist and your own senators, by going to
http://www.senate.gov/...
and urging them NOT to put S. 3696 up for a vote.
