When the scope of the horrors of the Final Solution were finally exposed in 1945, the question arose as to the state of knowledge of the German people. That question remains, to an extent, unresolved today. The state of knowledge of Americans about the horrors of Abu Ghraib may offer an answer to that question.
The fact that juveniles were sodomized Abu Ghraib hasn't exactly been a secret for over a year. The Boston Herald covered it, NBC apparently mentioned it, and Sy Hersh has spoken about it. This fact, however, has not made its way into the public consciousness, and the WH continues to do everything it can to keep it from seeping out.
Since I don't owe anything to Richard Daley, I can say w/ absolute certainty that, if juveniles were sodomized by Iraqi guards while American soldiers photographed it or videotaped it, the line between those soldiers and the SS is an extremely fine one. In fact, the line is primarily one of the quantity of those victimized than it is of the quality of the depravity involved. Obviously, even the worst critic of the Iraqi war never expects to see death camps set up by our armed forces. In terms of the individual actions of the soldiers, there really is nothing more fundamentally immoral than participating in the process of the torture of juveniles.
Every policymaker who matters in DC probably knows the truth about Abu Ghraib. I sent a letter to Bill Nelson, one of the Senate's great DINOs a year ago, and I never received a reply. Every regular on this site has a pretty good idea as to what happened. Millions of people in the Arab world have a pretty good idea, as well. The only relevant people who remain blissfully ignorant are the American public in whose names (and w/ whose tax $) these abominations are occurring.
I suspect that any German who cared to know what was happening to all of the Jews, Gypsies, Communists, gays, and other "undesirable elements" who were being shipped east could've eventually learned the basic facts. Given the far more open nature of our society, anyone who wants to know about Abu Ghraib clearly can know. The fact that so many do not care to know does not speak well of our society.
