THE Math, the Repudiation of Rove and Why We Should Continue to Hope

Thu Nov 09, 2006 at 08:10:08 AM PDT

Let us dance briefly in celebration  before beginning to dismantle and repudiate the vast Rovian mechanism of arrogant cynicism, hypocrisy and divisiveness
which has become so pervasive that we've come to consider it normal.  This is not as easy as it seems.  Evil taints everything in proximity to it, even those who oppose it.  We must be attentive to how, in seeking to overcome the empty political gamesmanship of the Neo-Imp right, we have not become too like the very thing we abhor.  We must not mistake tactical aptitude for competence or sudden success for a mandate.

I remain a proud Democrat and a Liberal (with a capital L) because I believe that we are capable of something that post-Reagan Republicans are not.  We see things as they are and not as we wish them to be.  We are not cynical or self-delusional.  We face reality.  Our eyes are open.  We see clearly.  Most importantly, WE ARE SELF-CRITICAL.  We don't delude ourselves into believing we live in a perfect, shining city on a hill when the truth is that we tolerate suffering and poverty and neglect within our American family.  We recognize - at the core of our ethical and moral being - that we are imperfect.  And though this recognition humbles us, our humility does not weaken us but makes us supple and strong and able to adapt, unlike the brittle rigidity of right-wing, top-down, authoritarian conformity which cannot tolerate dissent or admit error until it is too late to correct.  We will not allow our humility to be mistaken for timidity.  We must fight the portrayal of us as weak because we dare to substitute debate for jingoism and analysis for dogma.

Now that we have gained the respect of the electorate let us not squander it but instead act prudently.  It is truly a small slice of centrists among those we serve who determine the fate of this republic.  Let us not make the mistake of our opponents and forget that the vast middle deserves more respect than the vocal fringe.  I know we can do it.

Keep our sense of humor.  Honor the obligation we have so ardently sought and so clearly been tasked with.  Keep our sense of humor and our humility.

Now .... Time to Dance.
