I know this is a little off topic and does not have a lot to do with today's issues, but I need a quick vent.
I have begun lately to (again) read and hear the great conservative myth that Ronald Regan ended the Cold War. It has been on a few newscast and newspaper reports this week and I don't understand how this untruth continues to be spread.
Reagan did not end the Cold War any more than you or I did. Mikhail Gorbachev, Eduard Shevardnadze, Boris Yeltsin and the brave and courageous people in Eastern Europe and the rest of the former Soviet Union that stood up to power, ending the rule of communism brought about a end of the Cold War. Reagan just happen to have been having his mail delivered to the White House at the time. To be factual, Bush #1 was in charge for the first of the free elections and fall of the Berlin Wall, not Reagan.
The right wing sound machine likes to simplify what happen and give Reagan credit for something he had very little to do with. I understand why the right wing does it, they are desperate to turn the nice old man into a hero, but I had hoped that this crap had run it course and the actual facts of what happen would start to break through with the MSM, but I guess not. The rest of the world seems to give credit to the people who deserved it, why can't we here in this country? Is the entire media buying this wing nuts fairytale?
I know there is not much that can be done about it and in time, when the conservative political wave returns to the shallow pool it came from and the historians write about that time, the truth will be acknowledged. It is probably just one of the many myths about the old man that the right wing has come up with over the years that we have to live with. It is sad really to think they need to live in a fantasy world. Truly sad, but doesn't mean I have to like it.
Thank you for letting me vent!
