Josh Marshall over at Talking Points Memo points out a story from US News & World Reports of the Democratic senators (or those who say they will caucus with the Dems) in the incoming Congress who will have a Republican governor as of January. In addition to the names and states represented by the 19, the story also includes the ages of each--very helpful for the ghouls of the world attempting to predict how quickly any of them might drop dead and restore the Senate to a Republican majority. I'm sure US News has part II of this piece on Republican Senators with Democratic Governors but, it seems to be slow in appearing. So, I did a little research to help them out.
There are 22 Republican senators in states with Democratic governors. As US News & World Report points out, governors have the temporary power of appointment for Senate vacancies. If any of the senators listed below should vacate their seat before the next Senate elections in November 2008, the Democratic control of the Senate would increase
John McCain of Arizona - 70
Jon Kyl of Arizona - 64
Wayne Allard of Colorado - 63
Chuck Grassley of Iowa - 73
Sam Brownback of Kansas - 50
Pat Roberts of Kansas - 50
David Vitter of Louisian - 45
Olympia Snowe of Maine - 59
Susan Collins of Maine- 54
Judd Greg of New Hampshire - 59
John Sununu - 42
Pete Domenici of New Mexico - 74
George Voinovich of Ohio- 70
James Inhofe of Oklahoma - 72
Tom Coburn of Oklahoma - 58
Gordon Smith of Oregon - 54
Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania - 76
Lamar Alexander of Tennessee - 66
Bob Corker of Tennessee - 54
John Warner of Virginia - 79
Craig Thomas of Wyoming - 73
Michael Enzi of Wyoming - 62
Rather than going on death watch, maybe the media could do a little reporting for a change so that each of these senators could have all the information they need to make wise decisions. I know, it sounds crazy but, it could happen!
