  My sister and her husband live on the coast of Oregon, directly west of Portland and right in the path of the fierce storm that just passed through.  I can’t reach her by telephone and get no response to e-mails.  I’m assuming they are without power, but have no idea how much damage they might have sustained and whether they are physically safe and sound.  This apparently was the worst storm the Pacific Northwest has experienced in the past 13 years.  I’m hoping for the best, but still worried.

    Over a million without power. Only 6 deaths and most of those were in Washington. Phones these days just don't work without power.

        they've taken out a lot of them around here, and the ones that are left don't work half the time. Seriously, I needed one a couple of weeks ago when I had to call my cellphone provider from a landline (why do they make you do that, anyway?), and I found four that didn't work before I finally found one that did. That one took a bit of a hike to get to, at that.

          We were talking to to a payphone in the Quarter at least daily, playing switchboard for the gutterpunks, and I know of at least one in Uptown that continued to function. I'm not suprised they were out in many other stretches.

        Not in New orleans, they didn't.  Satellite phones did.  And believe it or not, some cell phones worked sporadically.  Ham radios Rock.  Wish i had me a license...

          They just eliminated the morse code requirement for all Ham licenses!  Basically, anyone now can get one (but, you still have to learn the other stuff and take the test, though).

    But there was very little human damage - probably they're without power, though. But I'm sorry she hasn't let you know - it's awful, waiting and worrying like that. I have friends up the road in Seattle who have emailed me from a coffee shop a couple of times because they're still without power. And cold.

      My sister has some health issues, but they're both fairly resourceful.  And even though my sister is prone to occasional hysteria, my BIL generally remains calm in emergencies and is the type to have stocked up on necessary supplies.

    in Ranier called me last night drunk.  She had to drive into work and home and was really freaking.  She works in Portland.  She said she drove over downed wires in the road, trees down and animals scared to death.

    in a lot of places up here. Phone service, too. They're probably just not able to connect to the outside.

    As an aside, we pay for a dial-up AOL account and have an old-fashioned dial phone just for this kind of thing. Even with a couple of days with no power we were able to contact family/friends to tell them we were OK.

  Good thing it wasn’t early tonight.

  I’ve been studying for a final exam, and damned near forgot.  I needed to take a break anyway.  

  All the words were looking like gibberish, and I’m finding it harder to retain the information.  Reminds me of the "Married with Children" episode, when Bud is trying to help Kelly pass her finals so that she’d graduate from high school.  The problem was that, as Bud put it, just like when you put more water into a glass that’s already full, some of the water already in the glass spills out.  So it seems the more information I cram into my head, the more information I lose that was already there.

  My two kids finished their semesters this week, so it’s just me now still studying.  While it’s good to have more time to study, it’d be nice to be able to get into the full swing of the holiday.

  Compared to the FP that so many other people here have, this ain’t nuttin’ at all.  Maybe we should start a diary, WNYFP (what’s not your fucking problem).

                of four cats, and me and my GF volunteer at a local shelter with about 800 of them.

                They really are easy, most of the time.  Feed me, pay attention to me, cuddle with me, play with me, stay the FUCK AWAY from me...

                As long as you don't misinterpret what they want, no problem.

                We inherited a cat from her mom when she passed away.  This 14 year old tabby hates other cats, loves people.  But she's very independent, and gets overstimulated.  So when she starts to slash and cut, I literally stick my head in her face and she starts to lick me.  It's my way of saying, "I trust you, let's play nice" and it works.

                Gotta know what they are saying, and what to say back.

                  She only really fusses at the vet, but then she SCREAMS. It's better when I let her out of the carrier before the vet comes in, and hold her while she's being examined (she's just scared). Recently, I was holding her on my lap, facing me, alone in the examining room. She was screaming like someone was cutting off her tail, sort of moving her head back and forth (to make sure everyone on both sides heard her?). All of a sudden, her face brushed very close to my nose. She stopped screaming, liked my nose, then started up again. I had to laugh...

                  And then there's the time, years ago, that I was helping hold her during her shots, and she started to bite me (she was screaming, of course), and I guess she recognized my taste or smell, because she stopped, licked my hand, then started fussing again.

                  She's a sweetie. So long as everything's exactly as she wants it...

                  2 cats 2 eng bulldogs 1 macaw - and they all get along. Why? Every species has a "suplicant" pose. Or a way of showing them they are the boss. For dogs, you get down of the floor, you two front paws, arms, lower to the floor than your legs, head bowed down. They immediately start to play with you as if you are a dog. That makes the cats very happy, because knowing they are superior to dogs, they are now superior to you. The bird thinks you are being a clown to please her and usually laughs or says "Cracker?"

            •  I had a tiny 4 room apartment in Miami

              After hurricane Andrew, a family I knew had to move out of their house and could not keep their cat and I said I would take it.

              All the windows and doors where closed when I left for work and I lived alone and the cat was in my chair.

              I came home from work and could not find her.  There was only 4 tiny rooms.  I asked if the landlady if she or anybody had opened the door and she said no.  I went back and looked again and could not find her.

              I looked inside the chair, the mattress, on top of cabinets, behind the refrigerator, under everything.  How long does it take to search 4 tiny rooms?  I finally gave up and sat down to read my mail and watch tv.  The picture was better than usual.  It was a big old wood black and white TV my sister had donated for my first apartment.

              And then the cat came slowly out of the back of the TV.  She had literally been inside the tv.  She was lucky she did not get electrocuted.  I found some screws to secure the back so she could not hide there again.

              Missing a cat? don't forget to check inside the TV.

I've watched his technique. first he just stares at the landing spot in question for a few days (he's gaging what it will take). Then boom bang boom, like flying through the air - makes it the first time. Then he's onto the next. Wow - that sounds like the men I used to date before I wised up.

•  My FP -- What isn't?!

  Well, I'll tell you. Lots of things aren't.

  I'm actually pretty danged lucky in the grand scheme. This week though has been a bit annoying.

  Nice that the water heater is living up to its name again. Did you know there's a little red button behind a plate accessible via a standard screwdriver that often just needs to be pushed? You know, just because... well, everything likes a little attention.

  I know now.

  After chiseling the crud off my bathing body (I just cannot make myself take a cold one even in the height of summer -- and it ain't summer now) I feel nearly human again.

  Except I'm not feeling well. Danged it. A week straight with fevers and body aches.

  And something else is heating up. Way too well -- NOT! Damn oven is the new Hades. Click it just to on at barely "warm" and it's quickly at 450 degrees. It pegs the temperature gauge inside at over 600 if dialed in any higher. Tis the season for baking not burning. Quick breads, squash, roasted veggies... ARGH!

  &$%W(%&$# FRUIT FLIES!!! There's nothing for them but they won't go away! I'm afraid I'm going to have to bomb the place. They like bagels. I make a bagel and I have to scarf it because I'm afraid I'm going to inhale one of the mini-monsters. On the bright side (and I always say to look there), I'm getting a heck of a lot of exercise waving the buggers away from my nostrils.

  Oh and Elizabeth D nearly forgot about us! :)

    It never fails.  Usually happens during vacations, too.

    I've been sneezing like mad lately, and my throats been a bit scratchy.  I figure my body is trying to wait if out for a few more days before hitting me with full force a day or two before Christmas.

      I love it! One year the ex-MIL became very sick. That's not good. But she missed out on her shopping. Not a big deal. Except she went out and bought everyone stuff they didn't want and that didn't fit, wasn't their style, etc. and told them she had the receipts for everything if they wanted to take them back but then wouldn't give the receipts. By the time I finally just took my jeans that were 6 size too large back they'd supposedly gone on clearance and I was refunded $6. Nice tidy profit for the store.

      Or she bought them on clearance!

      So glad that's not my problem this year or ever again. I'd cheerfully be sick rather than spend another minute with them.

      But I am sorry you aren't feeling well. Drink lots of water, as much as you can stand and try Coldeze. That really did me well last year.

        this year.Instead I had cards printed that say the following:

        A donation has been made in your name to a fund I have created entitled

        My Annual Christmas Drive to in some way give back to the Iraqi people what we stole

        I am putting between 35 and 150 dollars (depending on the person for whom I would have purchased a gift)into a special account. When this illegal moth**fu!!ng occupation has come to an end or when aide has begun to flow in (hopefully in my lifetime) the funds will be dispersed accordingly. Based upon my typical Christmas spending, I estimate that this fund will begin at $2000. I cannot see my way to buying gifts at such a time as we are living through. At least its a start.

    I feel for you on the black flies situation but don't have any good advice.  We stayed for six nights in a hotel in the French countryside.  These black flies were every where, even in restaurants (along with flies).  Before we became aware of the problem, we made the mistake of opening the window to let in a breeze while we ate a sandwich.  Bye Bye sandwiches -- within seconds they were covered with tiny black flies.

      I was enjoying a delicious sandwich. Spicy faux chicken. It was yummy. The air was clear. The phone rang or something. I set the sandwich down and when I returned 10 minutes later it was crawling with them.

      On the bright side, I'm not eating nearly as much. Fortunately I'd eaten 2/3rds but still.

      Seems like the less that's available to them the more aggressive they get.

      I used to be able to control them with a fly strip just above a 1/3rd full bottle of beer. They are attracted it seems by the yeast in the beer so go in and drown or get caught by the strip. I don't know what's different this year.

  •  Before you bomb it, try this

    Put all of your fruit and vegetables - anything you'd normally have out - into brown paper lunch bags.  Make sure they're securely shut.  The fruit flies will die of starvation within a week.  

    This always works for me in August, where one day I have bountiful bowls of peaches and tomatoes and stuff, and the next I have clouds of fruit flies.

      I know better yet I bought two bananas last August so I could make smoothies and I've been plagued ever since. I've done away with everything I would think they could want and so they attack other stuff. I cut my finger and forgot about the washcloth in the bathroom after bandaging up and they had gone nuts over the blood. Made me a little ill.

      I'm serious about the bagels. Looks safe and clear and the moment I try to eat they are swarming my face. They are jalapeno bagels so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. These seem to be the hardy variety. Never have they lasted so long.
