First up, Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA). Over at RK, we've caught Davis sticking George Allen's foot in his own mouth:
There is now what I call a 'creative class' -- a highly educated, multi-ethnic pool of knowledge-based workers moving not only to Northern Virginia, but also to Charlottesville and Albemarle, Richmond and Henrico, Tidewater, Williamsburg, and James City, to name a few. These individuals and their families are largely moving here from out of state, attracted to the jobs created in technology and other 21st-century sectors. To underscore this, last year Virginia exported more microchips than cigarettes.
Culturally, they are not traditionally 'Virginian.' - But their numbers are now too great to ignore. The good news for the Republican Party is that bringing them under our tent should be a natural fit. They are young, upwardly mobile, economic strivers -- and our message must speak to them.
Can you believe it? Just a few months after George Allen's "Welcome to the Real Virginia" comments destroyed his political career, Tom Davis says something similar - in a written editorial.
Sure, Davis wasn't pointing at an Indian-American in front of a crowd of white people, bullying him in front of a video camera. But Davis is still making the same point - these new residents of Virginia aren't like "traditional Virginians." Why not?
Well, he tells us - they're "multi-ethnic."
Boiled down to its core, Davis is telling his readers that, because this new group adds ethnic diversity to Virginia's population, they are not traditional Virginians. And, thus, these comments - made with plenty of time to reflect unlike Allen's off-the-cuff public remarks - are another stab at the ethnic communities of the state. Tom Davis is telling us that there is a traditional type of Virginian, and these newcomers don't fit the bill.
Next up, Rep. Virgil Goode (of MZM fame). Here's an excerpt from a letter that speaks for itself from Rep. Virgil Goode:
The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran.
Oh, it gets worse, believe me. Click the link to read the rest. (H/T Waldo Jaquith, one of the finest Virginia bloggers).
Seriously, what's wrong with Virginia Republicans?
