Is Green Day Being Censored by Touch Tunes?

Sat Dec 02, 2006 at 11:00:17 AM PDT

I was at a local watering hole last night and wanted to play a song I often do by Green Day...the anti right wing, obviously anti Fox News ditty called 'American Idiot' which was one of the most powerful anti-media/thought control songs ever made in the post 911 age. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed that or would check it out the next time they were near one of these machines.

I've included a link to the actual song and video, so you can see for yourself what a powerful statement it was against the right wing influence in media as well as its paranoia and divisive nature. The tune, of course, begins with the priceless declaration, "Don't wanna be an American idiot. Don't want a nation under the new media. Can you hear the shout of hysteria? The sublminal mind-fvck America!" (I can see Bill O'Lielly chafing at that line!)

One of the most powerful lines in the song is, "Well maybe I'm the faggot America. I'm not part of the redneck agenda," which famously tossed the whole 'gay agenda' bullshit right back in the faces of the religious kooks who, when they're not complaining because a Muslim elected official actually wants to exercise the 'freedom of religion' guaranteed by our country by taking his oath of office on the Koran, are constantly trying whip up fear of the those uppity gays actually demanding their rights and recognition as American citizens! It was especially encouraging to see musicians actually address the relentless assault on gays and lesbians for a change. I think musicians could've done more to ridicule and take on the anti-gay loonies like Santorum, Dobson, Bush, et al.

Now, of course, there may indeed be some reason why the song yanked off the playlist, but I just thought it odd that even with the more in depth search (which you may pay up to a dollar extra for)American Idiot does not appear, the the rest of the album's contents does. I hope I'm not coming off as one of those conspiracy nuts, but it does seem odd and I was wondering if any others had noticed it or any other clearly anti-Bush age music pulled from Touch Tunes line-up. Honest to God, I can't imagine why a rather popular and quite recent song would get yanked, but the Cowsills are readily available.

juke boxes appearing in many bars and restaurants these days. The machines can be attached to a wall or sometimes sit on bars or tables where patrons can either play music or different games on them

though I don't get "out" much these days.  ;-)

Thing is, American Idiot has been around since 2003 or early 2004...and Green Day played that song live on an awards show on tv (was it the Grammy's?)...so if they're trying to censor them now, I'd say they're a bit...LATE...in the process!

I do find it curious that the rest of the songs on their album are available tho.  That is weird.

is password protected on the website. But they claim to have a "gazillion" tunes, which I guess is more that a bazillion.

I would search for the Steve Earl's "The Revolution starts...Now"

... is good, but IMHO, the imagery of Jesus of Suburbia is better.  The first chorus is fantastic:

"And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
    That don't believe in me"

It's an old theme, but as a cynical atheist, I'm a sucker for the image of Jesus in the middle of suburban decay.

Don't know about any censorship going on. But you hang around this kiddy pool long enough and nothing would surprise us.

I am however, very moved by the Greenday/U2 video that accompanies "The Saints are Coming". Man, what a slap in the face to this hopeless, senseless, greedy, corrupt administration! Fuckers!!

  •  They still have juke boxes? (0+ / 0-)

  •  I'm pretty familiar with touch tunes (0+ / 0-)

Are you sure it was on there before?  I know of a lot of songs that have never been available on touch tunes.  But assuming it was... I don't know what the issue is with that specific song, but I know a lot of songs were recently removed from touch tunes because of ownership issues.  Several bands and record labels withdrew permission for touch tunes to use certain songs and albums.  It could be a part of that.  Or there could be other reasons touch tunes removed it.  Despite the claims made by touch tunes they do have a fairly limited selection of artists and songs for any genre that isn't mainstream teenie-bopper.
