New page for most common tags

A comment by Halcyon in this diary reminded me that I needed to do some more work on the nightly tag processing. So, the most common 400 tags appear here, with links to appropriate dailykos tag pages. (Well, it's 300 today, but will be 400 starting tomorrow.) A version of the top 400 tags sorted alphabetically will soon follow.

Also in the offing will be a page of new tags, with links to appropriate dailykos pages. It just occurred to me that the tag librarians have had to download and unzip a new tags file, and search dailykos based on the contents of that file, when it's little work for me to do that for them and stick the results out there with links. I'm an idiot for not having realized this sooner. Sorry.

    Use your favorite newsreader (I use google reader) in combination with the rss for your favorite tags. I have a dailykos folder in google reader with the tags I'm interested in. Based on your comment your feeds would be

      ...that works well for me.  I was just pointing those out as tags that get used relatively often.  Education will not come close to discovering a majority of education diaries.

•  I'd love to see automatic tag suggestion

  Would not be a very difficult feature to implement; I've done similar stuff before. The basic idea is, before posting a diary, the diarist can select a "suggest tags" button which will match terms which occur multiple times in the diary text against a list of popular and recommended tags, and put the best matches in the diary tags. (Some common corrections would be needed too, like "cheney" to "Dick Cheney", or "Evil veep" or whatever the official tag for him is.)

•  How about a page of un-linked Tags

  that goes down to five-offs, for the pupose of searching for pre-existing Tags, (It's the linkages and inconvenience that prevent many people from bothering) and have that page linked on the new diary editor at the Tag window, and at the 'Add/Edit Tags to this Diary' link? It has to be made easier for people to check. Another possibility (sneaky) would be to make it impossible to enter a Tag in the window (by the diarist, in draft mode) until after he's clicked to the Tag search page!

  Include hints for going about searching for pre-existing Tags on the Tag Tips page: to search, use only one word of a phrase, or the root syllable (without adjective, verb, noun ending), and keep hitting 'next' until an appropriate Tag is found. Also put this hint at the top of the new un-linked Tag list page. I'll be glad to write it, and make it succinct, with a few examples.

  Your new Tag list looks great. We also need to go way lower than a frequency of 100, or whatever the frequency of the 400th Tag. Besides correcting names I spend most of my time refining Tags in the two-digit frequency range.

    I've changed it to the top 600, and excluded etags (NY-05, AK-Sen, etc), so it'll easily go down to fewer than 100 diaries. The link is now incorrect, of course. It's now:

    common tags sorted by frequency | alphabetically

    The other items take a bit more coordination, but are good suggestions. As a first step, I should probably provide a tag search page under meta.dkosopedia.com...
