Despite the horrible title--
Clinton: Democrats 'struggling' with Iraq--this is an encouraging story.
The senator and potential presidential candidate said the Democrats' debate a day earlier on the Senate floor about war policy in Iraq was actually a sign of party strength, not weakness.
"Although unity is important it is not the most important value. It is, I think, a tribute to the Democratic Party at this moment in time that we are honestly and openly struggling with a lot of the difficult issues facing our country," Clinton, D-N.Y., told the New Democrat Network....
After the speech, she told reporters that the Democrats' public disagreements were a better alternative than the GOP's unified front.
"I think we come out more united," said Clinton. "We're not blindly united like the other side is, where they are like the three monkeys, Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak no Evil. They're not going to say anything negative about the president, the vice president, the secretary of defense or anybody else."
It's encouraging because it shows that at least one establishment Dem is getting the idea that this election is going to be about Iraq, and that the key for Democrats lies in contrast. Contrast between the Rubber Stamp Republicans and the Democrats who are willing to debate the tough issues.
One might think that HRC has been listening to Begala, who one might further think has been listening to the netroots. It's a theme that resonates, if The Moderate Voice is to be believed:
We've used the word "lockstep" often in our posts on this site. You have to differentiate between GOPers who display an independence of thought (often Libertarians) and those who will jettison previous principles, assertions, and values to get in-line with whatever the new White House line is. It's a BIG concern to independent and centrist voters.
