The TRUTH shall set you free! Cindy Sheehan... thank you!

Tue Jan 31, 2006 at 09:39:32 PM PDT

FOR THE TRUTH, GO TO CINDY'S DIARY! cindy sheehan, as we all know by now, was arrested for wearing a tee shirt that showed the number of american war dead.  she was removed from the gallery for something that she MIGHT do in the future (according to capitol police statement to cnn reporter).  she was removed 1/2 hr before the sotu speech (approx. 8:30pm), moved to a two different locations and is STILL being processed (midnight).

WHY is she STILL in custody? Simple.  DISSENT MUST BE SUPPRESSED! period!  i will wager you serious odds that she will not be released until after all of the wrap up programs are over, until after the llpm news cycle - until after the papers have been put to bed.

this is why we should pay attention to the substance of the story, not the subject.

please read on - there is a greater issue here!

she is being charged with a misdemeanor which carries the maximum penalty of of one year in jail... for something she had not yet done?

[warning, wordy personal experience coming up:]

two years ago in seaside, california cop and his watch commander who tried to ticket me two years ago for sitting in a running motorhome with all lights on, as i sorted cardstock for an appointment.  they tried to ticket me for "illegal camping", using the caveat that "we both know that as soon as we leave you will sleep here!".

my vehicle was "running" - i was visibly working at the table and had no intention of "camping", yet i faced being ticketed and fined for something that these two "officers" decided i WOULD do in the future.

THIS is what i think of tonite as cindy sheehan is being kept far away from the press.  she is being charged with something that she had not and has not done!  she is being held in custody for something that someone projected she would do in the future!

this is not about one mother who is protesting the death of her son - this is about ALL of us who might be accused of planning to commit some crime in the future!

my response to the two officers was to challenge their premise directly and ask based on what code did they intend to charge me with a "future" act!  i was not ticketed then, but they did not forget.  several weeks later, i was staying in my motorhome in property adjacent to the lot where i had been working - also had customer calls in the area.  i was on private property at the invitation of the business owner.  the officers had no jurisdiction, but chose to harrass me just the same.  at one point, after lights were shined into my motorhome, i came out and challenged again as to what purpose was their visit.  i informed the officer that i was there on business and had permission to be parked.  he asked  if i had a business license, when i responded in the affirmative, he asked to see it.  i stupidly showed him.  he took down my information (i have nothing to hide, right?).

the next week, when i returned to stay prior to my appointments in the area, i was told by the business owner that the police had paid a visit to the manager and said that if i were allowed to park there, the business would have ITS license pulled since only one business license was allowed on that property!

i don't scare easily.  i was livid and immediately went to the mayor's office in seaside. he was not in, but i was directed to the chief of police.  after telling him of my three encounters (also of my phone call to bernie ward, of kgoam - who referred to seaside cops as jackbooted thugs on air!), the chief was appalled at the abuse of his officers.  he agreed that there was no such "regulation" regarding a person with a business license cancelling out a legitimate business simply by parking on the premises overnight. he also said he would address the issue with his officers immediately and told me to feel free to park there anytime.

i told him i frankly was loathe to even drive through his town for fear of being recognized and stopped.  he then gave me his personal phone number and assurance that if i were EVER stopped, i should call him.

well, i still look in my rear view mirror whenever i am in seaside, i don't park there out of consideration to my friends (so they aren't targeted) and i am still angry.

tonight, i am virtually shaking over the preemptive arrest of someone who disagrees with the supposedly elected head of our democracy.  we are in very dangerous waters here.

no matter WHAT you think of cindy sheehan, this incident should shake you to the very core.  if you think it can't happen to you, buy a motor home and travel to seaside, ca.!  or better yet, buy a tee-shirt and travel to washington, d.c.!

as some posters personalize this incident, as some denigrate cindy sheehan, are they and we losing sight of the bigger issue?  from this diary, written back in august, it would appear that any person who disagrees with this administration is considered a threat to national security.  please don't think sheehan, instead think civil rights, for if we close our eyes now, we won't HAVE any soon!  i found out that one has to fight for our rights - but in the current clime today, i don't know if i would have won that fight!  i would hope so, but ...

so, what are YOU going to do about this?

this excerpted text from david swanson at afterdowningstreet.org

The shirt Cindy was arrested for wearing. This photo was taken earlier in the day at the People's State of the Union with Congress Members Conyers and Woolsey.

Cindy Sheehan lost her son in Bush's war. Tonight she accepted an invitation from Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey to attend Bush's State of the Union speech. She had told me earlier that she didn't want to go. But she ended up going. All day she had been wearing a t-shirt and a sweat shirt. When she unzipped the sweat shirt, revealing that the t-shirt displayed a count of US soldiers killed in Iraq, the Capitol Police lifted her out of her seat and hauled her off to jail. She was released over 3 hours later, charged with unlawful conduct, which carries a fine of $45. She did not see the speech and was not able to speak at the rally outside the Capitol or the viewing party at Bus Boys and Poets restaurant, as she had planned. This was completely unexpected and not planned for. Cindy is clearly tired and frustrated by the experience.

would indicate that cindy sheehan did NOT go to the sotu to protest after all! she had been wearing that t-shirt at the "alternative state of the union" gathering earlier in the day - and may have just not changed clothes. she had a sweatshirt over the t-shirt and a jacket over that.

and this is from reuters...

Sheehan had been invited to be a guest at the speech by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, a Democrat from her home state of California.

A Reuters photographer said Sheehan entered the House gallery a few minutes before Bush was to speak and was directed to her seat. She had been seated for less than a minute when a plainclothes agent took her by the arm, said, "You've got to leave," and rushed her from the gallery.

Sheehan did not resist and left with a smile.

Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider had no immediate details on why Sheehan was removed.

so, my question now, was this all a setup and an excuse to prevent her from attending the presentation out of fear that she might do something?

the capitol police have stated to the media (earlier quoted by cnn reporters) that they were on the lookout for her and were concerned that she might do something! looks like my original question is proving more accurate than i imagined! also looks like no sleep for me so i won't miss the morning talk shows. i really want to hear what she has to say about this!

I'm not jumping to conclusions just yet. I need more information. However, rejoice in how BAD this looks for the Rethugs. Everyone will be talking about this instead of the speech. It's a win, really.

Bradblog.com is reporting that she has been released and will be on the Today show tomorrow.

    •  larry king talking about it now... (none / 1)

the sad thing is that congresswoman jayne harman (d-ca) said on the show said "i heard she was trying to unroll a banner and that's not allowed" - king agreed - after saying that she was wearing a "protest tee shirt", he didn't correct her. too bad she didn't get her facts straight before speaking, again, repeating the cnn incorrect story - this is disgusting!

once the lie is out there, it just keeps on keepin' on!

12:22a ET - SHEEHAN FINALLY RELEASED! SAYS SHE WAS "ROUGHED UP"...According to Fertik who is in touch with David Swanson...

David reports Cindy has just been released. She was filmed by 3 networks and answered a few quick questions and mentioned she was "roughed up" - David said she looked tired and frustrated. She went off to sleep and will appear on the Today show in the morning.

what worries me is the "message" that is being sent to those who would disagree with this administration.

her answer - very judgemental - very stiff (not to mention, very inaccurate!

maybe we should just email her and correct her stupidity!  here's her email addy!

          i just did!

          Dear Rep. Harmon:

I watched you on Larry King Live tonite after the State of the Union Address and was distressed to hear you repeat inaccurate information regarding the arrest and detainment of Cindy Sheehan.

You stated (following Mr. King's statement that she had been arrested for wearing a t-shirt) that YOU heard that she had been trying to unfurl a banner.  This story was first reported by CNN News and was inaccurate.  Ms. Sheehan was simply sitting quietly in her seat wearing a t-shirt with the number of American war dead from Iraq.  She was not disruptive, she did not call out, she did not make a scene.  When confronted by the Capitol Police (who told the CNN reporters that they had been "watching for her" because they were afraid she would "try" something, she made no argument nor did she comment.

By your statement, you perpetuated the misinformation that indicates an action by Ms. Sheehan that did not occur.

I am extremely distressed that in our nation an individual can be arrested and detained for something that she "might" do in the future.

Are we now at the state of our union that preemptive strikes must be taken against American citizens who MIGHT disagree with whomever is sitting in the White House?

This, to me, is a very frightening affair.  As an elected representative of American citizens, you, too, should be frightened.

Please pursue this incident and please work to ensure it does not become the normal course for our beseiged nation.

          Thank you,

          Edrie Blackwelder

What company does your brother work for?  I was also in the "industry" when I was down there (went to UCLA for film school).  I interned for a year with a producer on the Fox lot in addition to being an analyst at a small box office tracking firm.

            •  My brother ... (none / 0)

... is currently self-employed.  He used to work full-time consulting for Toyota University in Torrance in addition to attempting to start his own film distribution (of American films to Spanish speaking populations).  That became too much for him, and now he just works on his own business.

Before his Toyota consulting job, my brother received his MBA from UCLA (Anderson School of Business).  Several years before that -- when he was 23 or 24 -- he taught for two years at Jordan High School in Watts for Teach for America.

  •  Just a hunch (4.00 / 2)

but I wouldn't be surprised if Sheehan was removed after a Republican or two recognized her, predicted that "trouble" would be coming, and had her removed on that basis alone.

  •  this is GREAT (none / 0)

    her message gets out AGAIN
  •  apparently (none / 1)

"demonstrating in the Capitol building" is against the law, so thats what they charged her with...and they considered her anti-war t-shirt to be "demonstrating"

there are some serious 1st amendment issues with both of those claims.

    •  Yeah! First Amendment! (none / 1)

Straight to the Supreme Court! That'll show 'em!

      Oh, wait...

    •  the problem with this argument is (4.00 / 2)

that she was sitting quietly wearing a tee shirt with a message.

did the capitol police remove anyone wearing a "support the troops" shirt?  or a "pro-bush" shirt?

had she called out, had she spoken, had she stood - then, yes, she would have been demonstrating.  the problem with your argument is that she did none of that - she was sitting quietly in her seat.  when confronted, she did not respond, she did not argue, she remained silent.

again, the capitol police have stated they were "watching out for her" when they heard she would be there because they thought she might do something.

this is what is totally frying my bacon here!  a future act invokes an arrest?  watch for it to be thrown out of court (as long as it isn't appealed to the ussc!)  this is a travesty!

      •  I'm telling you... (none / 0)

...Cindy has made some bad chess moves lately (Chavez), but this was a masterful chess move.

This goes to what types of garments would be acceptable to carry protest messages.  What about a tie?  What about a pair of socks?  Is visibility the issue?  And is the standard of visibility the person sitting next to her, or the TV camera?  And then what is the standard when it comes to people watching at home.  Certainly if you're watching on a 13" screen, you're not going to see Cindy's shirt.

This is going to get truly absurd.

Meeting Chavez, a popular twice elected President of his people is a bad thing? Man, we are really off course?
Why aren't you criticizing your Dems like Landrieu who were oh so excited about being in the company of Bush tonight? This just goes to confirm why I'm leaving the Dems and registering Independent!
          •  Oh man - Landrieu pissed me the fuck off tonight (4.00 / 3)

Watching Landrieu drool over Bush to his face after the speech about made me want to break the tv.  Good thing that Bush Anger is something I'm used to because I was at work and it wouldn't have been a fabulous thing to break the tv. :-)

What a fucking tool.   Watching her made me more pissed and sickened than watching the Bush-Judas kiss.   She is the motherfucking senator that represents those who were given the fuckin finger by Bush while they laid dying in filth and squalor as Brownie went to dinner and on and on and on....and she's fawning over him like a goddamned high school freshman asked out on a date by the starting senior quarterback?

WTF?   You're a goddamned DEMOCRAT representing the most destroyed region, directly and indirectly by the motherfucker you were showing your glowing admiration of like you were talking to your best bud.   You are a goddamned disgrace to your party and every single person you represent, Landrieu!

          •  You misunderstand (none / 0)

I don't begrudge Cindy meeting Chavez.  Great for her.  I respect Chavez and enjoy seeing him toy with Bush like a fur ball.

That said, Cindy The Political Figure does not do much to advance the cause or broaden the anti-war tent when she frolics with Chavez.  Tonight, she broadened the anti-war tent.  Threw open the doors.  People will sympathize with what she did and what she endured tonight.

That's all.  Don't make more of the comment than was meant.

                •  damn, i am so prescient! (none / 1)

she was released about 12:30am - just like i predicted!  AFTER the talking heads were done, AFTER the mistaken reasons for her arrest were repeated, AFTER the papers were put to bed...

a day late and a dollar short was the idea - delay her from speaking until the american audience is focused on ...say, the oscars... then it won't make any difference!

                  diffused and diluted!  yep!

except! the today show has scooped the neos - cindy is supposed to be on tomorrow (today) and will explain what happened then.  according to the storyline at bradblog.com, she was roughed up - there were protesters outside the police center where she was being held that were arrested and it appears there were enough of them to be manhandled as a group by the capitol police.

funny how no coverage of this has made the airways!

11:54p ET - CNN's Ed Henry finally corrects their report and confirms it was a T-shirt that was the reason for Sheehan's arrest.

He just reported during Anderson Cooper:

"She entered the gallery wearing a shirt with some sort of anti-war slogan...they were afraid she was going to do something with it in front of the cameras".

What, like wear it? The only opinions allowed in the people's Capitol tonight are George W. Bush's, we guess.

Here's another opinion on the "State of the Union" from outside the capitol tonight.

12:05a ET - Police Surround HQ to fend off Protesters... More from Fertik...

David Swanson reports by phone on the scene: During the protest in front of the Capitol Police HQ, 2-3 dozen police locked arms and pushed the crowd across the street. A protester named James from World Can't Wait was arrested for chanting "Free Cindy Now" with a megaphone. As the police grabbed the megaphone, they hit a woman protester in the head, but she is ok. They also kicked Aliska from World Can't Wait in the head, and she required treatment in an ambulance before she was released. Cindy is now being taken to the Central Processing Center in Judiciary Square, and the crowd is following her.

oh, the bradblog link has a picture of her in the t-shirt!  FINALLY, someone has a real photo!

here is a village voice article, also linked in bradblog...

Just because somebody doesnt agree with Sheehan diluting her message of STOP THE IRAQ WAR by branching off into some international multi-issue activist (and yes, it does dilute her message greatly, sorry to break it to ya) doesnt mean that they don't get what some in our party representation are doing.

OTOH, you leaving the Dems and registering Independent is fabuluous and allows you to scream off the rooftops that you're fucking they system over but in the end it doesnt amount to a hill of beans.   I wasn't registered Democrat until 2002 and the difference between being registered Indy and Dem was nothing more than a matter of my own opinion (misguided as it was) and had no impact on anyone beyond myself.   So join the "independents".   Hope it does your ego well.

that's my opinion but if they were gonna leave they'd have done so long before the majority of the party voted for a filibuster.  how asinine can you get in leaving a party over that when they haven't stood for our principles like that in AGES.

That reason is "Posession with intent to sell". Guns, drugs, information, software, etc. We are way behind on this, it seems ingrained in so many people that they can get away with this because they have.
