Des Moines, Iowa -- Rivals of Democratic Presidential frontrunner Howard Dean accused the former Vermont Governor of using crack cocaine.
"I think we should really ask ourselves if someone whith a $500 dollar a day crack habit can beat George W. Bush," said Massachusets Senator and presidential hopeful John Kerry. Kerry reacted to a press conference in which Missouri congressman and presidential conteder Dick Gephardt showed a photo of dean with white powder on his upper lip.
The Dean campaign was quick to deny the accusations. In a hastily scheduled press conference Dean angrily denied the accusations, spittle flying from his mouth.
"I'm disappointed that John and Dick have resorted to such lowly tactics," Dean raged.
Pundits and potical-watchers said that this could signal a big setback for the Dean campaign.
"I think he really needs to work on his image now or risk being portrayed as a crazed junkie in the general election," said fomer congessman and ambassador Dick Swett.
Later in the day Dean himself lashed out at a rival.
"I like Wes Clark," said Dean "but I know that hes a speed freak."
The Clark campaign denied the statements in a press release and said that they were more evidence of Dean's growing fear of them. The campaign also stated that they thought Dean should not criticise other democratic candidates in the interest of party unity. Dean angrily dismissed this complaint.
"All of the other candidates have been attacking me for months and now I can't strike back?" he asked.
