ITS THE SMELL!

Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 08:45:16 AM PDT

Every day, I come to work wondering what San Francisco will smell like today. Will it smell like shit? Like rotting fish? Like homeless people? Today I discovered a new smell, old cheese. The entire city smells like old rotting cheese.

What's in the news today?

Four Dallas Police Officers Shot

(02-16) 07:53 PST DALLAS (AP) --

Four police officers were shot Thursday as they tried to serve a federal drug warrant on a home in southwest Dallas.

Wow, I'm glad to hear that Dallas has so little actual crime that they can focus all their time on winning the war on drugs. We've been fighting that awesome drug war for like 50 years now, right? So by now we must be winning, right? How long do you suppose it will be before there's no more drugs? Another 50 or 100 years?

Aren't there more illegal drugs available now than there ever were in the history of the country? Aren't they more readily accessible than any time in history? Don't a higher percentage of people claim to have used illegal drugs than any other time in history? Oh there I go again using facts and logic. I really ought to stop thinking for myself.

More sort-of news-

House panel rips administration on Katrina response

"If this is what happens when we have advance warning," the special House committee said on Page 18 of its 530-page report about Katrina, "we shudder to imagine the consequences when we do not. Four and a half years after 9/11, America is still not ready for prime time."

Um, didn't we have advanced warning of the 9/11 attack? Something about Osama Bin Laden being determined to strike in US, a month before he striked in the US?

Also what's this shit about prime time? Is it supposed to be funny to compare this criminal corrupt regime to Saturday Night Live? Ha ha ha? Visit my blog, http://amurika.blogspot.com/

supposedly because people who profit off of ruining other people's lives don't want to go to jail...
and all you have to says is to make snarky remarks about the drug war?
Dallas would have been better off if it were the drug dealers who were shot.  And I am saying that as someone who thinks the war on drugs, as it is carried out, is a waste of money.
    •  I hate to inject some logic (none / 1)

But if there was no "drug war", there would not be criminals profiting off of drugs.

Drug laws CREATE the black market, and the more we enforce stupid drug laws, the more profitable it is to sell drugs. How do you not see this?

      •  bullshit and rationalization (none / 0)

just because drugs are legalized doesn't mean the criminal element is going to give up their black market cash cow.
And either way that is no reason to excuse murder or attempted murder just because you don't want to get caught breaking the law. Drug dealers are scum and they can lock every single one of them up for life and throw away the key for all I am concerned.

So when is it you are planning on inserting logic into the conversation?

        •  Here we go again (none / 0)

If drugs are legalized, it's not a matter of "the criminal element giving up their black market", there WILL BE NO BLACK MARKET TO GIVE UP.

A black market can only exist when something that people want is illegal. What part of that don't you understand? Remember prohibition?

      •  The law against having sex with a child (none / 0)

        Creates pedophiles.

The law against killing someone creates murderers.

Sorry, that tack won't get it with me.

I was called for jury duty and every single solitary case that came before the court involved drugs and/or alcohol.  The drugs and alcohol were NOT the crime they were charged with; it was some other crime.

I don't know how best to combat drug use but I personally don't see legalizing the use of some of the heavy-duty drugs as an answer.  Marijuana I can see.

        •  Bogus analogy (none / 0)

Please. Your analogy is so batshit stupid it makes me laugh. Can't you hold two opposing thoughts in your head at the same time?

I'm glad you got a laugh from my analogy ... but then I'll bet you get plenty of those in your world.

As for pedophile analogy .. and please don't say that I'm accusing you of that .... but many pedophiles think they have the right to do what they do and that people don't have the right to regulate their behavior.  Ever heard "Before 8, or it's too late."

Just because someone WANTS to do something doesn't mean it should be legalized.

    •  Dallas would have been better off... (none / 0)

If NO ONE had been shot.

If this bullshit DRUG WAR, aka Government Sponsored Terrorism on Behalf of Pharmaceutical Companies, didn't exist.

But I suspect we're in agreement on all that.

      •  MSOC (none / 0)

I hate drug dealers.  I am not talking about the poor suckers who are running the drugs for a dealer to earn their next fix.  Those people are victims and should be shown mercy.  But those people dealing drugs as a business are scum and they aren't going to quite being scum because the war on drugs is ended.
Selling drugs such as heroin, coke, meth... that's nothing but profiting of death and misery, legal or illegal.
        •  I hate drug pushers. (none / 1)

Doctors who push the drugs the pharmas pay them to push... government agencies that facilitate the easy pass through the FDA for the pharmas for their dubious cures...

Yup. Not too fond of the drug dealers and pushers, either.

          •  Last trip to the pulmonologist (none / 0)

After extensive breathing testing, I was given three prescriptions:  one was Advair (because I was wheezing; a little tiny bit); one was a steroid type (can't remember cause I wouldn't take it); and the last omeprazole for GERD.  I'm still wondering what GERD had to do with my breathing and coughing.

My cough is gone and I wheeze every now and then.  I filled the omeprazole and I take one every once and a while although quite frankly, peppermint does wonders for my stomach problems too.

My husband takes tons of pills and mocks me because I won't follow doctor's orders.  Bah.  My body.  Every drug has this long list of side effects.  No thanks ... I'll take if I ABSOLUTELY have to.

    The Smell of Katrina.

It wasn't old rotting cheese. Not by a long-shot.

And to anti-paraphrase Robert Duval in "Apocalypse Now"...it was not the smell of napalm in the morning. It was not the smell of victory.

  •  I'm sorry about the smell. (none / 0)

I really like stinky cheeses. But it's driving you nuts, so there should be a War on Cheese.

Bushco doesn't respond to warnings, or disasters very well.
9/11 = Sit down and read My Pet Goat.
Katrina = Pretend to play guitar; buy some shoes; take emergency responders away from emergency and out for a photo op.
Shoot Friend in Face= Go to ranch and make yourself a cocktail; tell law enforcement to come back in the morning.

Why should their beautiful minds be troubled with all this "advanced warning" codswallop?
