Being overwhelmed

It's hard not to feel overwhelmed with the sheer number of repressive things this government manages to get done within such a short space of time. I just have to hand the direction prize to the neocons. They may be morally idiotic, but they certainly apply themselves completely to their roles as criminals.
I suppose what I am really seeing is not so much the effectiveness of the one-party state, but the consistent refusal of the so-called opposition to mount any campaign against it. There is a myriad of things one could do, both collectively and individually, to defy this government. The refusal to give any more power to this regime is a start. The appearance at demonstrations all around the nation is something more. Local governments have defied the Patriot Act and other policies of this misguided regime, and even though that might seem ineffectual, I think it is highly significant. It's not enough though, for them to refuse to carry out Bush Regime policies. They must repudiate them as publicly as possible, and repeatedly. There has to be a way to make it clear that what this regime is choosing to do is unAmerican, subversive to both democracy and republicanism, and should not be tolerated.
As an individual, I know that when my time comes to turn in my fellow citizen, I won't do it.
When my number is up, and I stand & am counted, count me against the evil that has become commonplace.
I recently heard that Congress is debating passing legislation that would make it legal for hospitals and healthcare providers, in defiance of professional ethics, to refuse to treate anyone. In other words, the suffering person who places him or herself at the mercy of a doctor or nurse or hospital has only a 50-50 chance of obtaining succor. This amounts to the licensure of crime, a tolerance of the sociopathic market.
I think that some time in the future, we will all be given our chance to stand and be counted. Will you favor the imperatives of the market state over compassion and truthfulness?
