Cheers and Jeers: Your Monday Morning Playground

Mon Feb 06, 2006 at 06:53:58 AM PDT

Here it is, Monday morning again, the coffee is warm, the air outside is cold - as though it were actually winter here in the Northeast - and I didn't put together a Monday morning playground again. So, now I sit in my office at work, wondering what to write, just to open the doors to the playground.

My humble Cheers and Jeers will appear below the fold....Swooosh....boing!

Disclaimer: the white trash poet's Cheers and Jeers are in no way related to the works of Bill in Portland, Maine...I mean apart from the obvious format swipe, the use of the terms "Cheers" and "Jeers", but that is about it...oh, and the fact that I type this while wearing my custom made Bill in Portland, Maine mask...which is strictly a comfort thing.

Cheers to Bill, Michael, all the Bobs and Bobettes and all the Irregulars, both old and new.

Cheers to the next round of Yearly Kos auctions. Now is your chance to bid on a Cindy Sheehan speaking engagement, a rant by Hunter, a signed book by Markos, some very nice jewelry and a whole slew of other great items, and it is all for a good cause. Oh, there is a painting by some schmoe in there that you might want to take a look at - and no, I don't mean the one by Boran2 (which is very good as well)....

Cheers to being ahead of schedule. My goal for 2006 was to write 365 poems, one per day. As of last night, I have written 51 poems, in 36 days.

Cheers to the friends who popped up after my calling them out on Friday's C&J. It was nice to hear from some old timers again...

Cheers to that football game that was on last night. I didn't watch it, but I will try to give some commentary here anyway.:

Jeers to the refs. They blew that call for the (fill in team name here) in the (fill in quarter) when they (fill in questionable call).

Cheers to (fill in player's name) for winning the MVP award. What a great performance. His (fill in achievements) were amazing.

Jeers to (fill in player's name) for his (fill in mental mistakes). He clearly cost (fill in losing team's name) the game.

Jeers to the ad for (fill in product name here), could that one have been any more stupid?

Cheers to the ad for (fill in product name here), it was freakin' hilarious!

Cheers/Jeers to doing my civic duty. I have to show up for jury duty tomorrow. The jeer is for the timing. Things could not be more hectic at work right now and missing an extended amount of time is just not going to work...

Cheers to the birthday boys, Babe Ruth (1895) and Bob Marley (1945).

I piss on your grave birthday Jeers to Ronald Reagan, who was born on this date in 1911.

Cheers to Super Bowl inspired poetry...

super bowl Sunday

as a kid, I was never one
for football, more of a baseball
kind of guy,
on the big game Sunday,
the neighborhood dads
would gather at my best friend's house,
we were invited to watch
the first half,
but had to vacate at
half-time,
in those first hours of game,
my buddy and I would
scout for half empty,
tepid stale cans of old Mil,
sneaking sips whenever possible,
when half-time came,
we were rushed out of the house,
for the dads had a different
kind of half-time entertainment
lined up,
we would play half-drunk
games of backyard ball,
pummeling each other,
feeling no pain,
not knowing what we
were missing out on inside,
that is, until my buddy stumbled
upon the bounty on the kitchen
counter the Monday following
the game,
there stood a stack of
rented porno flicks,
three or four deep,
of course, we checked out much
of each film, exposed
to a whole new world of
raunchy filthy fun,
the dad came home and
returned the films,
never knowing of our
late afternoon film fest,
and we never looked
at super bowl Sunday
the same way
again...

"C&Jers), come out of your closets,
Open your windows, open your doors,
You have been holed-up too long
    in your closed worlds.
    Come down, come down

down from your foothills and mountains,

Cheers to my hometown Steelers.  It was a game of some crazy plays, questionable calls and lots of agonizing, but we came out on top.

Cheers to Pittsburgh fans, who had a huge street party all over the city last night but did not turn violent or crazy.  Just havin' a good time!

Cheers to the end of football season.  Now Sundays can become more productive again!

not the best game I've ever seen but wow... and folks who whine about the questionable calls, remember, they went both ways.  There was so much holding on seattle's offensive line it was ridiculous.

anyway it's a happy day in the Burgh, for sure!  Hooray!

    •  You Won Thanks to Corrupt Officials (4.00 / 3)

Wow. You really feel good about winning a game that was plainly rigged in your favor?

Go to the Seattle Times page and read all the reader response coming in from all over the country -- everyone thought the refs' poor calls decided that game. It was so clearly biased against a single team.

I wonder how the NFL can bill itself as a family sport when any 11 year old could see the whole thing was rigged.

Go to the ESPN national poll with over 60 percent of the country saying that poor officiating affected the outcome of the game.

I wouldn't feel good if I were a Steelers fan, winning a game 'cause officials were making shit up in my favor. Even the ABC commentators noticed it and commented on it (but not enough). Even FOX sports writers are calling bullshit bullshit.

      •  BWAAAHAHAHAHA! (4.00 / 2)

You are claiming the Superbowl was rigged for the Steelers?  I laugh.

Seattle penalized themselves out of a win, and Pittsburgh won by 11 points, not 1 or 2.

        •  Not rigged (none / 1)

          But definitely unfair somehow.
Lousy calls (and there's always lousy calls, only human) did not break both ways - ALL IMPORTANT BLOWN CALLS went for the Steelers.

Not just my opinion.... much of America woke up today with a bit of a queasy stomach, and it wasn't just all the food we ate (oh, we ate....!).

Jeers of course to the usual suspects -- many potential job avenues for me ceased to exist in my current org as the Feds slash all non Iraq/Halliburton funding.  While we might argue about the current job market for scientists and engineers, we do need more of 'em along with a helluva lot more research funding so that they all are discovering the next "big thing" to give the next big economic boom.

A lawyer had successfully handled a difficult law case for a wealthy friend. Following the happy outcome of the case, the friend and client called on the lawyer, expressed his appreciation of his work and handed him a handsome Moroccan leather wallet.

The lawyer looked at the wallet in astonishment and handed it back with a sharp reminder that a wallet could not possible compensate him for his services. "My fee for that work," acidly snapped the attorney, "is five hundred dollars."

The client opened the wallet, removed a one-thousand dollar bill, replaced it with a five-hundred dollar bill and handed it back to the lawyer with a smile.

  •  I had to stop by today. (4.00 / 21)

I hate that I don't have time to get to C&J much before it has so many comments that the point would be moot - today, however, I have a bit of time.

CHEERS to the diggety dog Steelers!!  While they are not my first-choice team (the Washington DC team whose name we do not speak has my undying loyalty), they have been my second since last season.  I was heartbroken when they lost the AFC Championship game, at home, last year.  I was touched by the poignant story of Ben Roethlisberger in the locker room, crying, asking Jerome Bettis to stay for just one more year, that the Steelers would get him a Superbowl victory in his home town.  They delivered, and delivered for a set of players and coaches who I think are stand-up guys - leaders one and all.  So cheers and congrats to the Pittsburgh Steelers!!

CHEERS at this very moment to Arlen Specter.  Yes, I know we don't usually cheer him - but I'm listening to him put the BOOTS to Alberto Gonzalez right now.

CHEERS to whoever the hell nominated my blog for a 2005 Koufax Award for Best New Blog.  I am utterly at a loss for whose ass I need to kiss and what to do next.  Suggestions are welcome.  :-)

And BIG ASS JEERS for the Pepsi ads and the ad for the Fusion Razor.  Yuck.

HOWEVER SUPER BIG JEERS to the crypto-genocidal talk I've seen related to this current crisis on a number of other sites I surf at, including Craigslist. Some of the talk comes from Europeans, and it angers and shocks me that some people have OBVIOUSLY LEARNED NOTHING FROM THE LAST CENTURY OF HORROR.

Standing up for freedom of speech, that's one thing. Advocating crpytically that it's time for a "final solution" for Muslims because all they apparently want to do is kill westerners (not true of course) is so not. I fear humanity's days are really numbered.

Cheers to me for watching the game. I had actually planned to drive around and enjoy the emptiness of the usually-choked roads in our high-speed-transit-less city. But then went to a superbowl party like the rest of the city.

Jeers to all bad officiating, everywhere. It's getting to be as bad as Figure skating. The momentum of the game was utterly deflated by bad calls.

Cheers to the Sun. I had come to expect only cold and wet sensations coming form the sky, and was totally shocked by warmth coming from above. I feel better already.

Cheers to the Rain. The drought is over here, finally. It may feel wet to me, but the trees are happy, and you can feel it!

Cheers to the Wind. Very very very windy over here in Seattle, and out on Vashon Island over the weekend. Kinda gets your blood punping.

Cheers to Fire. No electricity saturday night, but good ol' fire warmed me up anyway. Kinda makes me add on an extra cheer for opposable thumbs, and frontal lobes.

Cheers to airplanes: I'll be riding in them twice in the next two weeks, and I'm just so grateful that they exist at this point in time to take me to places that would be too far to drive.

    Cheers everyone!

  •  C&J - Chill Pill Edition (4.00 / 20)

CHEERS  To modern chemistry!  Through the wonderous powers of Percocet and ibuprofen, Sam was able to wipe out a nasty case of tooth pain this weekend.  Tooth pain is the worst!  Makes Sam angry and enraged.  Brings out "Hulk Sam".

JEERS -  To DKos infighting.  Ummm....Wes Clark puts out a dire warning about our country, Torture Gonzales is about to be sworn in to congress, Ford just laid off thousands of our people while their CEO makes glossy aw-shucks commercials, and the terrorist mastermind of the Cole atttacks just fucking escaped!  Plenty of more important things to spend time on.  Don't agree with MSOC?  Don't read her then.  Don't agree with Kos about protecting his brand?  Plenty of other sites to surf.  Down with the circle-jerking.  Time for working together is now.  Too much at stake.

  •  Cheers to Steve Forbes (4.00 / 8)

In the 2/13 issue of Forbes he calls for Shadegg as new Majority leader (and we know how things turned out).

Investors and business leaders had better hope - and hope hard - that Representative John Shadegg (R-AZ) wins his uphill fight to succeed the discredited Tom DeLay as Republican leader in the House.  Only with a dramatic change inn leadership can the GOP hope to regain voter favor.

    The stakes are enormous......

Of course HIS view of things is a wee bit different than those here, focusing on all those nice tax cuts and such that will disappear when Repubs lose power....

    BUT..... this is notable

When business leaders are saying change is needed and NECESSARY in the Republican leadership....there are problems

Let's be blunt.... even business is worried that this bunch are bad for business.... (though they're worried that Democrats are worse)..... Steve wants the "good" Republicans to straighten things up.....quick, while they still have a chance

  •  Cheers (4.00 / 11)

To memories of watching the Rolling Stones live in 1973, Johnson Gym, UNM campus, because last night was not a very good Stones fix. But Mick can still prance! *JEERS* to Abu Gonzales. He can't prance nor can he give a cogent, believable answer to a question. *CHEERS* To the Columbus Dispatch's funny story on Bob Ney's re-election announcement at the Tuscarawas County Republican headquarters: An Unfortunate Juxtaposition. The Republican Headquarters sign, right next to a Cash Land sign. Bob, this is your karma! And it ain't good!

  •  Other (4.00 / 15)

My favorite commercials were the ones for TV shows! Specifically the Desperate Housewives series with sports jocks talking about which character they identify with and then what they wish would happen to them. Tony Hawk worrying that "Bree is hitting the bottle too much" just cracked me up. For some reason I love it when sports guys do commercials - and end up being pretty darn good at it! The other one I enjoyed was the "I'm going to disneyworld" spot with various Seattle and Pitt players pratising that line. Very cute.

The rest of the commercials were total DUDS!!

The game was at least entertaining. I didn't care who won.

The BIGGER event was Grey's Anatomy afterwards. I love that show and the episode they aired last night had me on the edge of my seat! Is it Sunday yet? I need to know what happens next!!

Cheers everybody! Thanks for the playground WTP.

    •  i agree... (4.00 / 7)

... with you re: Grey's Anatomy.  Never caught it before, but their commercials hooked me into watching it... and i am waiting for next week's episode to find out what happened...

  •  Tired Monday Cheers (4.00 / 13)

CHEERS to WTP for keeping the pool open!

CHEERS to the Pgh. Steelers! Way to go gang. I'm going to miss Jerome...........he is a first class guy.

JEERS to sleep deprivation. I am sooooooooo tired today. Is it time to go home yet?

CHEERS to snow. I can't believe I said that but I would enjoy making a snowman and sled riding with my little one.

JEERS to Arlen Specter. Blah, blah, blah.. If you are going to have a hearing SWEAR in the witnesses. What a farce.

    CHEERS to all of you!

  •  Danno's C&J (4.00 / 12)

Cheers to my beloved George Washington University Colonials. They're 18-1 and #10 in the nation. They drubbed Richmond on Sunday 80-55 for their tenth straight win.

Cheers to the Caribbean Series. Venezuela and the Dominican Republic played one of the most entertaining baseball games I've seen in a long time. Venezuela won 11-9 thanks to a three-run homer in the top of the ninth by Alex Gonzalez (Red Sox) off of Jorge Sosa (Atlanta Braves). Miguel Tejada and Ronnie Belliard also hit bombs for the Dominican, which blew a 6-1 lead in this one. Belliard's homer was a Captain Caveman style blast.

Cheers to MSNBC. Really, hear me out. They're televising every single Olympic men's hockey game during the Torino games. NICE!!

Finally, Cheers to our Monday Morning Quarterback...the white trash poet.

  •  cheers to Detroit... (4.00 / 11)

    ...for a flawless Superbowl performance.

cheers to be for having the game on...though I ignored it and played video games with my son instead.  Didn't notice any special commercials.  I thought that was the whole big deal.  Heard halftime.  Thought that was the other big deal, but it was shorter than I expected - three songs.

who would have thought: superbowl hype surpasses the reality?

cheers to Grey's Anatomy, not my fav show, but it was good last night.

cheers to the MVP Bettis who apparently is a hometown boy.  (I know NOTHING about football.)

Cheers to my son doing an excellent poster board project for school made with goldfish crackers depicting the ocean.

Jeers to my son home sick with a cold today.  I'm sure he's cheering it, though.  Cheers to my boss being off today, recovering from yesterday's revelry.  My main reason for being here today is her NOT being here.

Jeers to stress, money worries, Rx I can't afford, dr. appt. copays I can't afford, utility bills.

    Cheers to all!

  •  cheering (4.00 / 10)

Dove, for a wonderful ad, especially in terms of the placement

Sprint, for the "my phone has crime deterrant" - okay, that's a 180, but OMFG, that was funny.

Animal Planet's Funniest Home Videos cat edition - well, less for the stupidity and more for my dog's reaction. The kids try to get her to watch Snow Dogs with them (she's a husky) but she ain't interested. Cats on the telly, however - pooties and poochies!

one jeer - to the report I've got to finish in less than an hour.

  •  Short C&J (4.00 / 2)

CHEERS to who was lost but now is found.
    cheers to the cafe
