i've wondered if the same thing might happen in NO, that nagin would lose power as the mayor of the city.
four thoughts:
one: the environmentalist on meet the press who said $14 billion to restore the mississippi river wetlands; to do it right and that sinking cities are a threat throughout the country with water levels rising.
was his name titwell? i think this is important and needs to be followed. we know the feds will try to do it on the cheap.
don't just restore the levee system, restore the region. his thesis is that the levee system is causing the city to sink.
two: the reconstruction jobs, and other jobs should be given first option to the citizens of new orleans.
and,
three: what kind of payment (in lieu of taxation, that sort of thing) do the oil and gas refineries pay to NO? it strikes me that, this really important area of the country, with the refineries and fisheries, is in the back yard of one of the poorest (in terms of per capita income and education, not in terms of culture) cities in america.
AND,
if we withdrew from iraq now, the world would understand. good excuse to exit.
