Edwards has gotten a lot of press today and yesterday because the Des Moines Register endorsed him.
A number of minor Iowan newspapers have endorsed Kerry.
These endorsements make me wonder if we're seeing the first example of media backlash against Dean and Clark for their anti-big media comments.
Here's my logic.
Des Moines Register is a Gannett paper.
I'm not sure about the smaller Kerry papers. But chances are good that they're owned by a large corporation.
So I wonder whether the corporate powers that be in local media have decided that on-the-record big media bashers Dean and Clark will not get their support this election season.
It wouldn't be surprising. They've got a lot to lose if a Democratic President nominates a hardliner to join FCC commissioners Kopp and Adelstein.
It seems to me that it's a question worth keeping in view. If more newspaper endorsements break against Dean and Clark, it'd be worth wondering--and discussing prominently--whether or not the newspapers aren't really choosing their endorsements based on self-interest.
