Republican Official Opposes Hospital Visitation Rights
WASHINGTON, DC - On Wednesday, March 30, Maryland Lt. Governor, Republican Michael Steele, told WTTG news that he and Governor Erlich oppose legislation that would allow same-sex couples the legal right to visit their partners in the hospital. Steele stated that he and the Governor oppose any promotion of "gay unions" as well as the singling out of gay couples as a protected class to receive hospital visitation rights. Steele argued that if same-sex couples have the legal right to visit their partner in the hospital, then heterosexual couples should enjoy that same right. However, legal marriage already grants heterosexual couples this right. Steele further stated that "any bill that comes across the Governor's desk promoting gay unions, or gay marriage, will be vetoed."

What are the public opinions in Maryland on this bill? Do they agree that it's "special rights" (even though the bill allows for unmarried older straight couples to use these benefits)? What are the margins for overriding a veto in MD? Does this bill have them yet?
You really have to be a cold-hearted piece of shit to veto something like this, especially in a state where you will face little public backlash. Maybe he's going to have his wife go and threaten to shoot gay and lesbian couples if they don't stop asking for those special rights of theirs.
