I'm not planning on donating money to Stephanie Herseth's campaign for a House seat in South Dakota, so I'm not shilling here for her or asking anyone else to donate to her campaign. I am disappointed that many here on Kos don't recognize the reality of what Karl Rove and the White House are doing in an attempt to divide Democrats along the culture war divide. There have been and always will be disagreements among Democrats on issues like abortion too, and at times this has hurt us at the polls. (It also has hurt the Republicans, BTW.) The important thing is that Herseth has come down on the side of the Democrats, not the Republicans, and that is the bottom line.
Anyone who thinks we wouldn't be better off with Nancy Pelosi replacing Dennis Hastert as Speaker of the House is just cutting off their nose to spite their face if they reject Herseth over the gay marriage issue. After all, disagreement is allowed between us, and it's vastly preferable to have it within a Democratic Party holding a majority of seats in the House rather than between Republicans and Democrats with the Republicans in power.
So if you can't support Herseth, fine. Just don't go ballistic in proclaiming how awful she is and help piss away our chances of taking a seat in Congress away from the Republicans. Because sometimes, discretion is the better part of valor in politics.
