CA-GOV: Ahnuld up by eight (Field Poll) [UPDATE]

Tue Jul 25, 2006 at 09:21:05 AM PDT

With a hat tip to Political Wire:

"After signing the state's timeliest budget in six years and running $12 million in post-primary campaign ads," California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) now leads Phil Angelides (D) by eight points in his re-election bid, 45% to 37%, according to a new Field Poll.

Those are likely voters, at 15% undecided. I hate to say it, but that would make for a 12-point swing in favor of the Gropenator since the last Field Poll came out a month ago (link).

More on the flip.

It's a fairly small sample:

For most questions, the poll surveyed 731 likely voters by telephone between July 10-23, with an error margin of 3.8 percentage points. For questions on the governor's performance and the state's direction, the poll surveyed a smaller sample of 498 registered voters, with an error margin of 4.5 percentage points.

But I seem to remember that the Field Poll has a good reputation in CA. Anybody? The approval numbers aren't in the article, but it looks like they have turned around as well, as has the right-track-wrong-track indicator:

The findings contain additional good news for the Republican incumbent: More voters believe California is headed in the right direction than the wrong direction for the first time in 22 months, while Schwarzenegger has his first positive job approval rating since February 2005.

It's just one poll, so I don't want to sound like Chicken Little. But the change since last month is quite significant, and we all know that CA has never (at least not in recent history) failed to reelect an incumbent governor. But, as dday reminds us, Arnold's political future may well depend on wether the power grid holds up these days, or the rolling blackouts return. One thing's for sure: Kennyboy Lay, who caused the blackouts that propelled Schwarzenegger into office, isn't around to help him. Update [2006-7-25 13:7:44 by brainwave]: sanchez96 just posted a second diary on this topic; but his has more info and the link (PDF!) to the actual poll itself, rather than to an article about it. This doc states among other things that Angelides is indeed still suffering from weak Dem support, quite possibly a result of the negative ad war during the primary:

Republicans are rallying strongly behind Schwarzenegger, with 85% supporting the Governor. On the other hand, Angelides has not yet achieved the high level of support that successful Democratic candidates typically receive among their party's rank-and-file, with less than two in three (63%) currently backing his candidacy.
Update [2006-7-25 13:7:44 by brainwave]: And here are the approval/disapproval numbers:
For the first time since February of last year, more voters (49%) approve of Schwarzenegger's job performance than disapprove (40%). In addition, voter impressions of the direction the state is heading have become more positive than negative for the first time since September 2004.
49%, that's pretty darn close to safe territory for Scharzenegger, but not quite there yet.

How reliable is this poll? Have Californians noticed a mood swing? Am I full of it? Here's what the article has to offer by way of factors behind the apparent turn-around:

"The rebound in the economy has benefited the state budget and improves the backdrop for the whole election," said Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo. "Any incumbent running for re-election wants to run in an environment where the economy's direction is positive and voters are feeling confident."

Democrats suggest Schwarzenegger has merely benefited from outspending Angelides in television advertising -- an estimated $12 million worth by the governor's campaign and the California Republican Party since the June primary. The ads have run in pairs, with one promoting Schwarzenegger's record and the other criticizing Angelides.

Arnold is under 50% which isn't a good sign, and almost 20% of the electorate is undecided. I wonder what the name recognition is for Phil Angelides is among California's likely voters?

I wonder what effect the rolling blackouts in California will have for Arnold? If I remember correctly, the blackouts were the start of the downward slide for Gray Davis that his numbers never seemed to recover from. I wonder if it will drive Arnold's numbers down and have a similar effect as the one it had on Davis?

    •  Like I said (0+ / 0-)

at the end of the diary, my guess is, if the blackouts return, Arnold is toast. (Btw. undecideds in this poll are only at 15%.)

There haven't been any, although there may be some if the heat wave continues.

We lost power here in North Hollywood for a short time last week and other people have been having quick power outages in other parts of L.A.

The newswoman on KPCC yesterday said that California's estimated power consumption for this summer is going to be at the level they originally estimated for 2010. Last night, at 11:45, it was 80 degrees outside my apartment.

        Rolling blackouts are coming.

about 175,000 customers blacked out on Sunday, but that was due largely to failing transformers.  The ISO is making it through by the skin of their teeth right now.

Here's Angelides' whole problem in a nutshell:

State Treasurer Phil Angelides, a Democrat running for governor, criticized the Schwarzenegger administration for its handling of the state's energy resources. "We shouldn't be asking businesses to shut down or the elderly to turn off their air conditioners," he told reporters.

Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Julie Soderlund defended the state's utilities, noting they met California's power supply needs amid record temperatures.

Excuse me?  Is the Democrat now the ANTI-conservation candidate?

There's such an appealing story to be told here and Angelides is missing the boat.  The voters believe in their hearts that they're being scammed again.  They see the giant freeway sign lit up saying "conserve energy" and they want to believe that government's screwing them.  Angelides hasn't told that story.  I have.

See update just posted. Pretty close to 50%, and the best he's had in ages. But he isn't outta the woods yet. Let's do whatever we can to make sure he doesn't get there.

and won re-election.  But the last blackout was in July of 2001 and his election was Nov. 2002.  It could be disasterous for Arnold if this happens frequently so close to the election.

Arnold seems to be on top of the heat wave.  He's being proactive with conservation.  I think most of us are more concerned with our AC than whether the budget was timely.

Tying Arnold to this energy crisis is VERY important and Angelides needs to do it right now.  He needs to remind the voters that Arnold was very tied in to the last energy crisis, using it to get elected on the backs of consumers.

It's the only shot we have.  Because the field poll is GOLDEN.  It's the best poll in the state.  And the internals of the poll are far far worse for Phil.  Arnold's favorability is above 50 for the first time I can remember.

Mayor Villaigosa (LA mayor) won't even endorse Angelides, and Westly's campaign manager was taking shots at him AFTER the primary.

united with Phil sometime after the primaries. I guess the Westly followers have yet to do the same...

And D-Day, you took the words right outta my mouth! We definitely have to take every opportunity we can to associate Arnold with Bush, Enron, and the previous power crisis. (And from the old CNN articles I've seen, it was quite a scorcher in 2000 as well.) Arnold failed to bring many megawatts into the state from what I heard; I have an aunt and uncle that live in Laguna Niguel.

This was also the first time I've seen my hometown in the Inland Empire reach 110! It did top 100 a few times in Rancho Cucamonga when I lived there in the 80s and early 90s, but I've never seen it reach 110 until now!

    •  What is up with Villarigosa? (0+ / 0-)

I do not understand what his problem is.  I am thinking it has something to do with Villarigosa's plan to consolidate the LA Unified School District under the command of LA mayor's office.  I am not sure why he wants to do that, but I believe he needs the state legislature to approve it.  I am guessing Angelides is opposing Villarigosa's plan (either explicitly or implicitly).

total braindead with the record heat wave... i am not putting too much stock in anything!

also, as for primary turnout - well, THIS staunch democrat was unable to make it to the poles - so that is one more vote for a dem in november - i planned to vote for whichever candidate won in the primary so my physical presence did NOT signify lack of interest - just a lack of presence this spring!  this thing, imho, is not as cut and dried as a poll sample shows.

Hillsman can spice up Angelides campaign commercials like no other. Look at what he's done for Ned Lamont's campaign - taking it from obscurity to the national stage with his very creative ads.

    •  We think alike! (1+ / 0-)

You must be very smart. ;)

Dems need to understand that personality is very important in campaigns, and Hillsman knows how to connect candidates to voters in a positive, and personal, way.  Another key here is that if he doesn't define himself, Arnold will do it for him.

Phil is not going to beat Arnold simply by promising to raise taxes.

The Field Poll has an excellent reputation. These numbers are likely fairly accurate.

Of course, I seem to remember the Field Poll showing Angelides losing to Westly by double-digits in primary season. I could be wrong about that.

  •  Poll (0+ / 0-)

The Field poll has been shown to be quite accurate.  But putting aside the two non-traditional polls that came out in the last week or so that gave Anglelides a slight lead, it's notable that Schwarzie, as the incumbent, is at 45%.  He probably has little room to grow.

  •  Hey, I just found Phil's (0+ / 0-)

    proposed energy plan.

    Link

“Arnold Schwarzenegger promised us in 2004, ‘Trust me. Everything will be under control. Your lights will stay on.’ And for three years, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been singing the music of California’s deregulation scheme, thwarting efforts to create an environment that attracts clean power to California,” said Angelides. “It’s time to send a strong signal to the market that the failed deregulation experiment of Enron, George Bush, and the energy power pirates is over once and for all.”

YES! YES! WAY TO GO, PHIL!!!

Another wish of mine came true! Phil pointed out an instance in which Arnold FLIP-FLOPPED!

Soon after taking office, Schwarzenegger said that he would “get more private investment” in the state’s energy market because “we have to build more power plants...

Power plant construction has stalled since Schwarzenegger vetoed legislation in 2004 (AB 2006) that would have paved the way for the construction of power plants by investor-owned utilities in the same manner as before passage of the energy deregulation bill in 1996.

  •  Aha! (0+ / 0-)

Sorry, to move our previous discussion over to this diary.  I just realized that you had diaried this poll.  I realize where you got the 12 point swing from now.

Unfortunately (but understandably), you linked to a diary from a Field Poll that was done in June 2005.  13 months ago, not 1 month ago.

In fact the last Field Poll (end of May) showed a Arnold lead of 7.  So we're talking about basically no trend here.

Link to the field polls: http://field.com/...

Even if we won't see eye to eye on this poll.  I hope you can at least be a little less pessimistic knowing that the trend lines aren't really there.
