Little Green Footballs investigated by FBI! Oh my!

Thu Aug 10, 2006 at 08:49:19 AM PDT

Heh heh. Gosh, who ever woulda thunk THIS could happen? Its not like LGF is a blog that makes brutish racist comments, like, all the time or anything.

The bit about LGF getting visited by the FBI is toward the bottom of this piece essentially about Charles Johnson, the heroic founder of Little Green Footballs. The article is not great, and I THINK its supposed to be critical of the black/white worldview of the LGF types, and how certain media issues feed their thinking, but again the article is pretty weak. At any rate, the FBI detail was amusing to me.

Here are some nice bits from the article. First, an example of Johnson's dedication to the truth :

In Johnson's view, the news media haven't adequately sounded the alarm about threats to Western societies posed by radical Islamic groups -- something he says he seeks to redress through his politically conservative blog.

"My main take is that political correctness has kept a lot of the hard truth from being spread by the mainstream media," says Johnson, 53, a professional musician in Los Angeles who spends most of his time maintaining his blog.

Yeah. That darn mainstream media! So, so liberal!

"The vast, vast majority of Muslims want to get along and live a comfortable life just like everyone else," he says. "But the mainstream media shies away from showing the public the real face of Islamic extremism. They don't want to offend. And they are influenced by some strong advocacy groups that are funded by Middle Eastern countries, which are actively engaging with the mainstream media to promote a point of view."

Uh-huh.

Not everyone, though, is a fan. Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights organization often vilified on Johnson's blog, calls Little Green Footballs "a vicious, anti-Muslim hate site . . . that has unfortunately become popular."

The irony, Hooper says, is that if the same kind of "hatred" that appears on LGF appeared on Muslim sites, it soon would be used by LGF's fans to justify their worldview.

...

The FBI, according to Hooper, recently investigated several threats of physical harm against Muslims posted by Little Green Footballs readers.

Johnson acknowledges the investigation but says Hooper's organization initiated the complaints to try to stifle free speech on his blog. And Johnson names the Council on American-Islamic Relations as one of the groups he's referring to when he talks about the undue influence of Arab-funded organizations on American society and the media.

Stifle free speech? Alrighty then. There's no word on what the outcome of this FBI investigation was, or if this is something that's routine with community sites. Has dKos been investigated for anything speech related?

I confess, I have never once given LGF a web hit. All I know of the site is purely secondary. It does seem to be the most popular conservative community site on the net, edging out Free Republic. Does LGF have a certain something that the others dont?

If this has been diaried already lemme know.

  •  Hate Site (11+ / 0-)

It is basically a hate site ...  Brought to you by advertisers like Verizon Wireless and Circuit City.  Eh.  Free speech, yes, but not if people are using the system to conspire to harm others.

There is also bar.baen.com (book company discussion site) which is in the end an outpost of Simon & Schuster from which I was ejected for advising the moderator that one of their prominent posters was calling for the mass murder of Islamites.  When I say mass I mean a hundred million or so people was being viewed as a good target.  I do not know if any concrete acts were taken in this direction.

    •  Was it SM Stirling? (0+ / 0-)

Sci-fi author SM Stirling (writer of Island in the Sea of Time, and the Draka series) has had some of his books published by Baen, and I have seen him express some virulently Islamophobic views on Usenet and on weblog comments.  One of the most disturbing was posted recently on the weblog of Charlie Stross (another sci-fi author, from Edinburgh), which concluded with "There's a lot of denial about this (the nature of Islam), because the implications are fairly grisly. The implications don't make it any less true, however."  A poster on the alternate history Usenet newsgroup also tried to organize a boycott of his book The Peshawar Lancers in protest at anti-Muslim statements he had made on Usenet.

embarrassment, for its Islamophobic and bigotted basis. ProIsrael threads are most often contrasted by hate for Arab peoples and their derision. The cartoons of Arabs I have seen have their parallels in the Nazi antiSemitic cartoons.

It is sad to learn that he has received awards for his support from some Israeli organizations.

is unchecked, unbridled bigotry, fear, and jingoism.

They do not respect Islam or any of it's followers at all. They consistently and jokingly refer to it as the Religion of Peace (RoP on the site) and then blame it for all the violence in the middle east.

    for example:

Ah, yes. The ROP strikes again.
    PBUH my f*cking ass.

Are we going to start taking these shitheads seriously (as in deporting the entire CAIR lot, etc.) now?

Is there anyone here that thinks that we are NOT in the early stages of WWIII, or that this isn't going to contine to escalate into even uglier events?

    /kinda sad & damned mad

The site focuses 100% on middle east violence, with an extremely reactionary, right-wing, pro-israel (of the unquestioning variety) view.  The diaries are extreme, but the comments are worse.  Often, comments are full of threats, racism, and well, plain stupidity.  Heres a good one:

Your link ... those awful faces ... now I'm going to have nightmares.

    If I sleep.

I consider LGF to be a clearinghouse of "doomsday conservatives" .  The understand the importance of fighting terrorism, but they overreact, due to deep seated racism, feelings of ineffectuality, and FEAR.  The people on LGF are terrified of Islam and liberalism.  They believe these two things will destroy society. They fail to realize that the only adequate response to terrorism is a liberal response.  A strong, well planned defense that includes intelligent military action and even more intelligent diplomacy.  The LGF strategy is to bomb the middle east out of existence (save Israel of course) and make Islam illegal.  They are the definition of WINGNUTs.

p.s. One thing I do like about LGF is their recent focus on some doctored Rueters photos.  They have done a nice job pointing out manipulations that have caused some less reliable journalists to be kicked off of Reuters.  Accountability in the press is important.  I wish they would focus on the doctored intelligence that led us into the Iraq war... but thats just wishful thinking.

    •  the Reuters photos were a good catch, but... (0+ / 0-)

the only reason that Johnson noticed them was that the extremists on the right were desperately looking for evidence to support their contention that the MSM is assisting Hizbollah in making Israel's bombing campaign look bad. They simply can't admit that the Israelis are killing hundreds of innocents, so they're seeking to change the subject by attacking the media. So Johnson stumbled across a fact by a route of intellectual dishonesty.

and several related blogs, specifically concerning one of their nutty conspiracy theories in defense of the Qana bombing.

After I posted the first diary, an anti-islamofascist website posted a smear of me, which I described here. It's one of the nastiest personal attacks I've seen on line.

    These people are truly vile.

Here are the alexis stats for the three sites (LGF FR and Daily Kos).

You'll notice a spike for the reuters matter for LGF but they're pretty low overall.  I don't think the spike for Kos has registered yet but you can see the beginnings of one reflected. I think that one will be huge.  LGF is still pretty small even compared to FR.

Pathetic site by the way.  Definitely a hate site against Muslims and liberals.
