We all know plenty about the ultimate issue within the Democratic Party. Abortion. Or, as it could be called, 'Queen Abortion', because she rules the debate floor in the Democratic Party. This journal is a blog of my thoughts on abortion, and my stance. I'm trying to display my heavily thought out stance, and make other people see it too.
Like I mentioned above, abortion is one of the biggest and most divisive issues in the Democratic Party. It also shows big regional differences. In West Virginia, 59% of voters are registered Democrats, but 62% describe themsleves as pro-life. It is also an issue that drives people off, and brings people together. As a whole, it is a very complicated issue.
Abortion is the issue I have thought about the most, and I have actually switched positions three times since 2004(Once upon hearing an episode of Rush Limbaugh. The guy maybe an idiotic, ultra-conservative wingnut, but damn, can he present evidence, and talk you into to believing him. Did the samething to me in the Teri Schiavo case too. Switched my position on the recently as well, after seeing Michael Schiavo on Countdown.)
About five months ago I came to my final consenus on the issue, and it was not a quick and clear cut thing, I thought about it for while, long and hard. I, for once, abandoned the simplistic, black and white single line thought, "I support a woman's right to choose', or 'A woman can do what she wants to with her own body.' And, instead thought about in terms of real colors, and took in consideration all variables. (Sorry to make this sound like a math equation). This was the result of my thoughts. If you don't moind I would like to plot them out for you so that you can get a good idea of my logic.
Let me start off by saying, I am pro-life and am not changing my postion again. No one convinced me or brainwashed me to become pro-life. I'm not extremely religous either. I haven't even read the entire bible yet. Though I do go to a Methodist Church twice a month, and am found of reading excerts, and bits and pieces of the bible. In fact one of my favorite books is 'Saving the Bible from Fundamentalism' by an Espcopalian Preacher. I'm sorry I can't remember his name right now, it just alludes me. I'm sometimes not so great with the names. I haven't seen the book in a while so I'm beginning to forget.
Anyway, I am also against the Death Penalty in all forms, but, (just to get off subject for just another second), I believe in at least a mandatory life sentences, with the only chance of parole being if a panel finds the person changed, and a new person ready, and wanting to exist in society again.
My stance, however is diferent than many Religous wingnuts. I'm not on a moral crusade for abstinence and against all forms of unmarried sex. It's just I realized, after thinking about for a long time, that there's little that can be done to defend abortion these days. With birth control pills, and even more importantly the Morning After Pill. The Morning After Pill can be taken the morning after sex, and has a 90% prevention rate. It's safe, easy to use, and relatively inexpensive. There are also condoms and other safe sex tools available on the markett today.
Plus, it has been shown that abortion causes serious physiological effects in woman, especailly younger woman. It's cause a lot of emotional pain, and unwanted stress to these poor woman. Then the act itself is unappeailing, no one in America loves preventing an unborn, sometimes not completely formed fetus the chance to become a baby. Notice there that I didn't use the term murder, because I won't, and don't. I disagree with that term, and think that it overstates things. The way I see it, it's simply preventing a fetus from reaching it's full potential.
The way I like to explain my stance is not too complicated. I say it's one third Religon, one third the actual act of abortion, and one third that there's no need for it anymore and that it has become an outdated medical precedure, and along with that the emotional problems it gives many for those who get abortions. With out one of those, I would be pro-choice.
Now the question I'm sure most of you have on your minds at this point is, does this nut support the South Dakota Abortion Ban. I'm going to answer that right now, no I don't. And for a multitude of reasons. Here they are:
1. The South Dakota Legislature refused to put in a clause for the womans health, saying it would dilute their bill, apparently up there a woman is a piece of meat.
2. They refused a rape and incest clause. Remarkably they said that the only good thing coming out of rape or incest should not be destroyed. Bascially that a woman should have to carry a rapists child. Can you imagine that?
3. It's way to strict, and does not contain any of the componets mine would.
For your information I do support an outright ban on abortions. Now you're probably wondering what my plan is. Well, allow me to lay it out for you.
1. In my plan a doctor wouldn't be sent to prison for five years. On the first incident he would warned, On the second it would be a misdemeanor and he would be fined 2000, on the third his license would be revoked. And, if there was a fourth, he would be sent to prison for practicing medicine without a license
2. In my comprehensive plan, every pharmacy in the state would have to carry the Morning After Pill. State medicare would also have to cover cost for those who are on Medicare.
3. Exceptions would be provided in the health and life of the woman, incest or rape. And, when the baby is shown to be horribly malformed in the fetus by a sonic ultra-sound. In this case, if married, would require the permission of the spouse, if not, then only her decesion would matter.
4. Another part of my plan would be more comprehensive Sexual Education Programs which don't focus only on abstinence, but also on safe sex.
5. If the woman did not want to have the child she got pregnant with, then she would be payed, (as if she were a surrogate mother), a sum of around 2000 dollars to carry the child then hand it over to a government a adoption agency. And, she would be given acess to health and weightloss programs to get back into shape after the pregnancy.
6. A large nationwide public awareness campaign to inform people of the Morning After Pill, (Co-Payed by the Pharmaceutical that makes the pill of course!).
So, you see, overall my plan is rather moderate, and much different than that of most conservatives. I bet that it's the first time you've ever heard of this plan. It's rather liberal, much more than what many Conservatives want. It's also much different than badly formed, and very all around awful South Dakota program, which I strongly oppose because it incorporates non of my plan, and is to strict on doctors, or the person performing the abortion. You see, unlike the common Pro-Lifer, I'm would not ban abortion and leave woman hanging. As always this ArkDem14, writting about what no one else covers, signing out.
