TX-14: Shane Sklar Can Beat Ron Paul

Thu Aug 17, 2006 at 07:42:09 AM PDT

On Tuesday, I introduced you to Shane Sklar. Among other things, we talked about how his background has given him knowledge on the issues, history with the district, and his experience on the campaign trail. However, in Texas, you don't only need a great candidate -- you need the right climate to win. So let's take a look at the district, who Ron Paul really is, read about his disastrous voting record, and why those all add up to Democratic victory this November.

Get to Know the District: TX-14

When looking at the map of TX-14, there is something incredibly important to remember: TX-14 is 60% different than it was in 2004. If you look at the interactive map that shows how the district has changed since 2000, you can see how drastically the district (in light blue) is, especially the tremendous change since the map was re-drawn for the 2004 election cycle. The new map, in fact, borders a great deal of Tom Delay's old district, TX-22. DeLay's district and TX-14 share borders in Brazoria, Ft. Bend and Galveston counties. Ed. note: The image is courtesy of our friends over at the Lone Star Project.

Why is that important? Many political experts believe that the constant messaging against DeLay will seep into TX-14, inspiring Democratic and depressing Republican turnout. It makes sense: the district doesn't know Paul, and based on some of the early newspaper coverage, doesn't care much for his out-of-touch, ideological agenda.

Early polling shows that Shane Sklar is posed for an upset

A poll commissioned by the Shane Sklar campaign of likely November voters shows some excellent numbers on the race in TX-14. Among other things, the poll shows that:

  • Only 33% of voters want to re-elect Ron Paul, whereas 48% want to elect someone new. 20% were undecided -- and Sklar is going after that 20%. The campaign has identified 60,000 persuadable households, and are preparing a very thorough and focused field and direct mail program for those households. According to the campaign, Shane Sklar can win if these voters change from 55% for Paul to 56% for Sklar.
  • Shane Sklar leads Ron Paul 54-30% in an informed Congressional vote. Within that informed vote are 84% of Democrats, 50% of Republicans, and 58% of independents. Ed. note: Don't forget to donate here to Shane Sklar's campaign. When read a brief paragraph of Shane Sklar, voters generally support Sklar at a rate of 64%. TX-14 wants someone new, and Shane Sklar fits the profile perfectly.
  • 73% of TX-14 voters are dissatisfied with Congress. Tom Delay, who is in the neighboring district, only had a 64% disapproval rating. In a year that everyone acknowledges is trending Democratic, TX-14 has one of the highest percentages of voter dissatisfaction of any Republican-incumbent district.

Ed. note: for more poll numbers on the race, inclduing a look at Ron Paul's voting record, please look below the fold.

Ron Paul's voting record is out-of-touch with TX-14

There's a reason why he's called "Dr. No." Ron Paul has voted against:

  • Hurricane relief for his Gulf Coast district
  • Social Security and Medicare
  • Veteran's benefits and funding the VA
  • The Voting Rights Act
  • The Violence Against Women Act
  • The Stem Cell bill
  • Campaign finance reform

An article from the Washington Post led with the following:

Republican Ron Paul missed out on the 19th century, but he admires it from afar. He speaks lovingly of the good old days before things like Social Security and Medicaid existed, before the federal government outlawed drugs like heroin.

The out-of-touch ideological agenda of this 19th Century Man is the primary reason why Shane Sklar must defeat Ron Paul in November. Not because Paul is necessarily wrong on every vote, but because he rarely -- if ever -- votes for his district. Voters rated Ron Paul's voting record as "very negative" on the following key issues:

  • A 53% very negative rating on his votes that oppose any Medicare prescription drug program. By the way, 31% of voters in TX-14 are over the age of 65.
  • A 51% very negative rating on his votes to abolish social security. Did I mention that 31% of voters in TX-14 are senior citizens?
  • A 58% very negative rating on his votes telling all doctors to refuse Medicare. Paging Dr. No: 31% of the voters in your district are senior citizens.
  • A 60% negative rating for his comments (and subsequent votes) that reflect his beliefs that 85% of African-Americans are criminals. In addition, Paul is on record saying that 95% of African-Americans don't have any sensible opinions. Ed. note: Feel free to donate here to Shane Sklar's campaign.

Ron Paul's old district might have enjoyed his out-of-touch Libertarian views, but 74% of TX-14 voters prefer a Congressman who will bring home federal money and jobs over one who promotes a personal ideological agenda.

Shane Sklar Can Beat Ron Paul

Shane Sklar has the perfect background, and he's got the perfect political climate. The numbers are there, the energy is there, and the experience is there. He's got the right ground team, the right message, and the right support to win. What Sklar really needs is the money to put the field and direct mail programs into place.

Ron Paul is not going to receive tons of cash from Republicans this November -- it won't take millions of dollars to defeat him. It just takes enough to target the voters and increase Shane's name ID. The only reason Ron Paul wins today is because of name recognition -- that's it. The polls all show it's Shane's seat to win if he can get the money for the field and direct mail programs.

Thanks for the update on Shane. I just contributed to Ted Ankrum TX-10 a couple of days ago. Maybe next month we can send some money to Shane.

Do you really think he can win? I must admit I was a little surprised when you guys came out with the Texroots endorsments. I am new to Texas politics. I moved to Texas in 1999. So what do I know?

    my enemy?

Nope, don't think so.  Why do Rove's dirty work for him?

If the Democrat wins, great.  But this should be the last race we emphasize or focus on.

    •  Why? (0+ / 0-)

Now that we've locked up Lampson (more or less), it's our best shot at stealing a seat in TX. And Paul is a terrible representative for TX-14.

Sklar's the right guy. The climate is right. Why not take Paul out now, and get some good votes for the district on things like social security, prescription drugs, hurricane relief, etc.

is the reason I admire him.

He votes his conscience every single time.  Not in order to get money for his district, or to further his career, but to defend and uphold the US Constitution (an 18th century document.)

I hope you understood when you signed up
that this is a Democratic site.

We've had discussions at Kos about changing
the conversation in this country, and how to
shift the conventional wisdom and relocate
the perceived center more in our direction.

That's a reason some Kossacks were eager
to get rid of Lieberman -- his stated positions
seemed to move the needle in the conservative,
reichtwing direction, both within the (D) party
            and the nation.

From that point of view, Ron Paul moves the
edges of the national conversation far, far,
far to the right, to an extreme.

Ron Paul makes the proclaimed intention
to shrink the government to a size whereby
it could be drowned in the bathtub seem
            almost reasonable. That's a direction
in the national conversation where few
            Democrats here want to go.

        •  This is a comment with little foresight (7+ / 0-)

We need victories in the house to overcome the republicans' lock.  Shane has the best chance and is the most qualified candidate to ever run against Paul.  If we pick up this seat, it helps us in the long run.

Additionally, the media market in this district (Victoria, Texas) is not nearly as expensive as the Houston media market.  So your money goes a lot farther in Tx-14 than it does in TX-22.  I'm in for the max.

I am personally appealing to every Kossack to give what they can.  Congress needs men and women who will serve their disctrict, not their own conscience.

          Fight on!

          •  Awesome maps (0+ / 0-)

            Those interactive maps are AWESOME,
            but lack some details.

It looked like the district takes in Galveston
Island and Texas City. Not enough voters
there to justify the huge cost of buying
broadcast in the huge Houston market.

But enough votes -- many labor, black, and
Democratic voters -- so that somebody better
find out quick how to get ads on cable TV
            systems over there.

Somehow the (R)s are smarter about using
cable TV than the (D) media consultants.

BTW As the maps show, Ron Paul used to
represent my home county. So I'll send
a contribution to Sklar as a sort of
            payback for that.

Shane is in line for the love.

Any Democratic win is good, but a lot of Libertarians will miss Paul's principled voice.

      •  I understand (0+ / 0-)

One of my best friends is Libertarian. Ultimately, I convinced him that Paul's comments about how most crimes in the country are the fault of African-Americans made my friend realize that maybe Paul was a little too crazy. Also -- a guy who doesn't vote for Hurricane relief money for a Gulf Coast district? Even libertarians must need a helping hand, now and again, right?

  •  Not To Be A Pisser... (0+ / 0-)

But what were the polling numbers BEFORE the "informed ballot"?

"Informed ballot surveys" tend to greatly glorify the numbers for the candidate conducting the survey.

That as of today, Paul is winning something like 52-37, in the Sklar's campaign poll. I'd have to check, but I think it's something like that. However -- Paul had 88%  name ID, and Sklar only had 25% name ID.

That's why the majority of the battle will be getting Shane's name ID out there -- doing direct mail and GOTV stuff for senior citizens that have a HUGE reason (several, in fact) to vote against Paul, and that's why the fact that they've already targeted 60,000 persuadable households is so important.

Remember -- Sklar was Field Director for Chet Edwards, who runs the textbook rural Democratic campaign. He knows how to win. He just needs a help. And like I've said before, the kind of money that could be raised for Sklar through Netroots -- or even just by more folks knowing about him -- could seriously help his direct mail and field programs.

  •  shane can win (0+ / 0-)

for as much as i appreciate ron paul at times, i would much rather see a great guy like shane sklar in that seat.

  •  I've got at least 4 votes (0+ / 0-)

that I can try to sway in TX-14.  My folks live there, and, after meeting Shane in Austin, I have been "selling" him to them.  I'm pretty sure they are all relieved to have someone ELSE to vote for, finally.  Top it off with the fact that he's a great candidate, they're excited about going to the polls.  GO SHANE!
