Pragmatism is great, but what of the Giant Killers?

Wed Aug 02, 2006 at 12:15:59 PM PDT

I'm a pragmatist, most definitely, I like to think of myself as a pragmatic progressive populist. I like to win, I think we need to. We also need to beware of making winning the only thing. For instance back in early 2004, I remember when we had the first blogosphere announcements of the kos dozen. The criteria that people voted on were varied and numerous, some people voted tactically, some based on analysis of poll results and previous trends, some based on strength of character. You name it.

Personally, I loved the entire process, and it's one of the things I lament the most about the change in "netroots endorsements", but I digress, perhaps part of it can be chalked up to things like redstates constant taunting and their increasingly "inventive" math to try to paint anything we do as unsuccessful, but it seems like pragmatism has been the watchword of the day, to the point that we (the blogosphere) have been ready to throw good candidates under the bus, or leave them at the bus stop at least.

However, what of the giant killers?
(much, much more behind the cut)

Some of you fellow old time readers will remember Jim Newberry.
Brother uncle to fellow blogosphere resident Sterling Newberry
He challenged Roy Blunt, House Whip, Delay's right hand man.

He did that at a time when it was considered pointless and foolish to even try.
You might also remember Roy Blunt as the fellow who was the other major contender besides John "Don't call be boner" Boehner for the majority leader spot after Hot Tub Tom took a hike. He's also dad to "baby" Matt Blunt, the jerko who just barely won the MO Governorship.

At the time there was nobody even challenging the Speaker of the House Denny Hastert, and Tom Delay's opponent, John Richard Morrison was virtually completely ignored by the establishment, after all Delay had drew that district for himself and he was invulnrable. Right? (heh)

I'm talking about GIANT killers folks.
John Richard Morrison and Jim Newberry were giant killers, some might call them sacrificial lambs. But you know what? Morrison, an absolute no-name made Delay fight for his seat for the first time ever, and both candidates tied up funds. If we had the muscle then that we have now, we might have won them, who knows?

Now there's nothing wrong with pragmatism, one of the diaries I wrote that generated some interesting feedback was one on rediscovering populism, but specifically Pragmatic Progressive Populism, of the like espoused by Russ Feingold, Brian Schweitzer, Jon Tester, Jack Carter and many more. Make no mistake this is the future of our party.

So I would like to say that yes, Bob Casey is by far better then Rick Santorum and should be supported, and Harold Ford would be much preferable to a Republican in TN. We should always be thinking big, think of it as a movement, not laying odds on the sure thing every time.

Let's look at my signature shall we?
It says: Jack,  John and Jerry in '06!

(If could fit it, after John Laesch there would be Jon too, completing the "dudes with J names" series but space limitations... sorry buddy.)

Let's take it in reverse order.
Jon Tester-

So it's conventional wisdom, now that Conrad Burns will be lucky to keep out of a jailcell let alone his Senate seat before the next term, but it wasn't so long ago that many insiders pooh poohed us folks in the blogosphere for a candidate that didn't have the "name recognition" and "instituional appeal" of the insider.

bullshit!
The better candidate won, and ol' flattop there is going to do us proud as the next Senator from Montana and bringing home that pragmatic progressive populism we all so know and love. Gooooo western strategy.

It may not seem like it now, but make no mistake Jon Tester is not only the real deal, he is a giant killer.
Just ask "fireman hater" Burns.

Jerry McNerney
This one is close to home for me, no literally... it's close to home, as in the next district over.
Yup, even in good ol' reliably Oakland where i'm represented by the always amazing and awe inspiring Barbara Lee, just one district to the east, towards the town I grew up at is the nefarious anti-environmental millionaire Richard Pombo.

Jerry McNerney is as good as it gets, and as somebody who actually grew up around the area, I can tell you that he is the kind of candidate that will win in this area, the key is name reco and turnout.

Even Rahmbo and his hand selected pro-war Iraq vet couldn't take out Jerry.
And even though CA is one big incumbent protection racket, Jerry can and will do it.

Heck even (principled) Republican Pete McCloskey has endorsed him, Republicans for McNerney.

say no to pombo!

John Laesch
John's signature says it all:
"Why yes, yes I am running against the Speaker of the House :)"

I met John at yearlykos, he's a great dude, and he's going to take Hastert out and be the next representative for that district. Plain and simple.
As long as we get behind him.

Hastert wasn't even opposed in 2004, which is shameful.
Anybody remember George Nethercutt? The guy that ran and lost against Patty Murray in '04? 10 years ago he took out former Democratic speaker of the house Tom Foley. There is precedent for this, and let me tell you this, I know John Laesch and if anybody can do it he can. Hastert, and all his power and pork are on the run, as long as we have his back.
Granted this is probably Hastert's last term as Speaker anyway, but taking him down sends a huge message beyond just taking out congress.

Plus John is awesome, which I don't have to tell anybody already familiar with the man or campaign, just take a look at his principled stance on verified voting (ok, so i'm biased since I helped him put it together... so sue me!)

Jack Carter
If I have a sentimental favorite in 2006, it's become Jack Carter.

I can track the entire progress of this race on the blogosphere, I remember first bemoaning that we had no challenger in NV when Ensign kind of sucked, kind of a lot. Then there was word that Jimmy Carter's son might run. After the initial shock (wait Jimmy Carter has a son?), I was solidly behind him, even when Oscar Goodman the "colorful" LV mayor and institutional favorite was pondering running himself.

I gave some money, I followed the race hopefully. And I also realized, when I got my handwritten thank you note from Jack himself, that Jack was a real class act.

He also happens to be a great candidate, who just needs the $$$ to boost his name recognition against Ensign-ificant. Check out the recent poll for that

However everything changed after I met the man himself in NV.
I could go on and on, but Jack is the real deal. He's smart, he's folksy, and more then anything else, he really "gets it" with the internet, the people powered movement thing, and everything else.

Replacing Ensignificant, a low profile Bush backbencher with Jack is going to be one of the big stories of 2006.

The netroots is betting on Jack in increasing numbers, despite the lack of an official "netroots endorsement", Carter for Nevada is becoming a movement campaign, which is an excellent thing.

Mark my words, Jack Carter... perhaps more then anybody else, for his name alone, is Jack the Giant Killer.
Too bad for Ensign, that he's looking less giant like every day.

So I say, throw Pete Ashdown some money, can a progressive Democrat win in Utah against a Senate institution like Orin Hatch? I don't know, I hope so, if anybody can do it... it's Pete, and if there is any time for it to happen it's now.

Ba... ba... ba... ba... Barbara Ann v. Kay Bailey in Texas? Sure!

Ned Lamont? Giant killer in action?
(although I doubt I need to sell anybody here about that)

Races aren't competitive?
Let's continue making them competitive I say.

Remember your Overton window (and if you don't know what that is, open up that link and read it ASAP!), if we want to make our ideas political reality we must make gradual changes.
That means that yes, some of our giantkillers will fail, but some will not.

And we will prevail.
Pragmatism is good, the pragmatism in our growing movement has yeilded us some great candidates and some coming victories, however don't let pragmatism blind you to the sheer joy of killing the giants out there, and friends, there are some giants to kill.

It's funny how quickly the bullies fold when you pop 'em one.

just because the house races can be so daunting.
But i'm sure you get the idea...

What seems far fetched at the outset becomes conventional wisdom eventually.

    Just ask Joementum...

So name your favorite giant killers this cycle, come on!

and a special thanks for your words on Jack Carter.  A class act, indeed.  I also recieved a handwritten thank-you for my very small donation, and have since sent in a second small donation.

I think a lot of people are going to be suprised (shocked) at how well these giant-killers do in November

I think about 5 seconds after I posted it, it was already halfway down the diary page.

      now that is enheartening.

Jon Tester, Jack Carter, Jim Webb, Ned Lamont, Claire McCaskill, Sherrod Brown, etc.

we are going to have an excellent team of Democrats in the Senate in '07. Same deal with the house.

    I've got my own list:

    Mary Jo Kilroy, running a surprisingly strong campaign against #3 GOP Congressvarmint Deb Pryce in Ohio;

    Fighting Dem David Harris, running against the super-rich, entrenched Joe Barton, in Texas;

    Barry Welsh, running against extremist ideologue Mike Pence, in Indiana;

    Bill Winter, running against hate-monger Tom Tancredo, in Colorado;

John Rinaldi, a Democrat with an exemplary platform, running against corrupt Committee Chair Duncan Hunter, in California.

Our lists are the same on one name, though:
John Laesch, running against the evil Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert.

A couple of these heroes are on my actBlue page at:

    http://www.actblue.com/...

Drop by, read the profiles, drop a dollar in one of the tin cups. Make it $1.01.

David Harris is a candidate with a tremendous heart, fighting an uphill battle against a humongous warchest. David posts here at Kos sometimes. Do a tab check on TX-06 and you'll find some of his postings. His web site is at

        http://www.followmetodc.com/

I don't know why John Rinaldi is running below the radar. Visit his website at

        http://rinaldiforcongress.org/

and see if you don't think his 20-point platform isn't a near-perfect manifesto of core Democratic values.
Blogger Taylor Marsh posted about his opponent, incumbent Duncan Hunter, at MyDD:

        http://www.mydd.com/...

that's how Rinaldi got on my radar. When I got to his web site, I was blown away at how good he is, on the issues.  Hunter is entrenched, but CA-52 would be a winnable flip, if Rinaldi could raise some more cash to raise his name recognition with. Hunter was down to $143K in cash on hand as of June 30 filings, the largest portion from defense contractors.
Not an expensive race, but DCCC hasn't given Rinaldi a dime, yet. He's raised $40K, all of it from individual contributors.

to some of these worthy races and opponents, instead of trying to interefere with the grassroots, we'd be so much better off then we are now.

No, I really have to thank you, for giving me a reason to check on Duncan Hunter's finance filings. The only reason I had not added John Rinaldi to my main ActBlue page was that I restrict the "2006fund" page to winnable races, and I had thought this district was too much of a long shot.

However, now that I know that Hunter has spent his warchest down to the point where he only has 100K more than the challenger, I'm reassessing the race. Rinaldi just needs some money, and for people to talk him up and get folks to look at his platform. So I added him:

            http://www.actblue.com/...

I put him right under Claire McCaskill.

Robert Rodriguez in CA-25.  He's running a slim, grassroots campaign against McKeon, who's one of those guys who never makes the headlines but does a ton of stuff behind the scenes.  Rodriquez is great, met him at yKos, and he's taking back part of CA that has been left alone too long.

this is actually the first i've heard of this district... and I live in CA (NorCal though).

And he was at ykos too... fascinating!

      •  I'm an Oaklander myself (0+ / 0-)

But originally from Bakersfield in CA-22 which borders CA-25 on three sides (though nont the entirety of those three sides).
Bill Thomas, who was CA-22's congressman for most of my life and, among other things, wrote the Bush tax cuts, is retiring and has an heir apparent in a guy named Kevin McCarthy.  At least he has a challenger, Sharon Beery a woman from the San Luis Obispo area who has some experience at the local level, and is right on the issues.  She even has an impeachment page on her website.
I don't see her getting the love this cycle though, even though I'm going to go down there and work for her and Robert once I can get the house I'm working on to a point where there is water and power and the rain can't get in.

Anyway,  all that to say: Give Robert some love!  He's working hard out there in Red California.

I'm an Oaklander too, i'm constantly amazed by how many of us there are here...

I'm originally from Modesto (Condit country! whooo!!)

What i'd love to see is for some of these strong challenegers in Republican districts win and then have redistricting happen to make the districts less Republican leaning and more equitable.

And yes, I know that means there are a few incumbents that might have to put up a fight, I think that's a good thing!

If you like the internet and you believe that you have the right to enjoy music, movies and such that you legitimately purchase however you like, you are the kind of person Orin Hatch writes laws to oppress.

This has happened.  It's called the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.  And people have been imprisoned for enabling the blind to read e-books because of it.  It's Hatch's baby.

Pete Ashdown started his own internet service provider, so he knows the internet isn't a "series of tubes".  And he also knows that copyright is not working exactly as intended, and the DMCA is part of it.

So if you care about these issues, consider kicking down some cash or volunteering for Pete Ashdown.  Hatch is not representing the interests of the people of Utah in regards to these things and they deserve better.

    •  indeed, indeed... plus! (0+ / 0-)

    •  Pete Ashdown (0+ / 0-)

Tacky, Thanks for the Ashdown acknowledgement, he needs an abundance of support.  I have been working on his campaign to "Scratch Hatch" here in Utah and must admit it is an effort in futility with the predominate religion 100% Republican.  In his agenda he writes President John F. Kennedy stated in the Salt Lake Tabernacle "...men and nations will pursue a variety of roads, that each nation will evolve according to its own traditions and its own aspirations, and that the world of the future will have room for a diversity of economic systems, political creeds, religious faiths, united by the respect for others, and loyalty to the world order." We must give the Iraqis the opportunity to evolve, and a referendum on our involvement will allow this.

I can be reached through momster diary page.

  •  Thanks for the mention of John! (3+ / 0-)

I, too, love that sig. And, no, I did not give him that... that's all him. ;)

Please, contribute to John! He's going up against $3 million of contributions for Hastert from the lobbyists. Let's show Hastert what real grassroots can do!
