WI-01: Milwaukee J-S Profiles the Candidates

Mon Aug 28, 2006 at 01:33:46 PM PDT

In Wisconsin's 1st District, in the southeast part of the state, there is a 5-way Democratic primary on September 12th.  Everyone (except for those 5) is intimidated by Bush rubberstamper Paul Ryan's warchest, and there is no Party anointed candidate, so this primary race is being run on ideas and old fashioned shoe leather.  The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel profiles the race:

All of the five candidates say they believe they have the ability to unseat the four-term Wisconsin Republican.

Certainly none of them has even close to the kind of money that Ryan has in his coffers, an amount approaching $2 million. Nor do they have the name recognition - all are first-time candidates except Jeffrey Thomas, who has made six unsuccessful runs for the job.

More on the candidates below the fold...

Ruth Santa Cruz Bradley:
Ruth SantaCruz Bradley said her faith sustains her and will help her through the election.

"I believe in myself," said Bradley in contemplating her chances against Ryan. "Faith is what got me into this race and faith will sustain me. . . . I've made myself available to God. If he wants me there, I'll be there."

Don Hall:

Don Hall said it was the 2004 election results, with a close race in Wisconsin for president but an easy victory for Ryan, that prompted him to run.

"I intend to make it a contest," Hall said of running against Ryan. Hall said he would be far more responsive to constituents than Ryan. He points to his experience working in the social services industry and advocating for people.

Mike Hebert (no website):

Mike Hebert, who calls himself "a working man's candidate," said he is disappointed in the direction the country has been going. Too many "suits" are running the country, Hebert said. He thinks he would better represent the people.

"We can do better," Hebert said of the nation and Ryan's record. "We're going in the wrong direction."

Steven Herr:

Steve Herr said Ryan is vulnerable because of Ryan's unfettered support of the Bush administration and his failure to listen to constituents. It's not about money, Herr said, it's about votes.

"I'm going to listen to the people, not campaign contributors," Herr said. Herr said he also brings a broad range of experiences, including running businesses, to the elected position.

Jeff Thomas

This is the seventh time that Thomas has run for the 1st Congressional seat. Thomas says his time has come.

"People are at their wits' end at what Congress has been doing and they want to send those people home," Thomas said. He said his experiences as a physician make him uniquely qualified for the job.

For reference, Jeff Thomas was the Democratic nominee the last three general elections, and never got more than 34% of the vote.  He is why Paul Ryan has accumulated a large warchest.  But his time has come!  This time for sure!

All in all, it was a good article about an unsung race.  It's interesting because this is a 100% grassroots and shoe leather campaign.  I've been working on the Steven Herr campaign, and it's been alot of meeting people at county fairs and festivals, working the crowds in busy downtowns, and working with local Democratic activists.  It's what campaigning should be about, although the worst of political campaigning is what awaits the Democratic winner: Paul Ryan and his $1.6 million.

This district, which gave 46% to Kerry, was Democratic before 1994.  This year is the right year to fight for it and try to get it to realign back to the Democrats.    If we put up a serious fight, the worst that can happen is that Paul Ryan has to burn though his warchest, making him more vulnerable for 2008.

      1,598.5 pledged + 89 projected + 287.5 Supers + 28 more add-ons + 5 Pelosi Club = 2,008 Obama's Magic Number is 17!

  •  In all honesty (0+ / 0-)

we are not going to win this race.  But an unexpectedly strong performance in this year will send the Dems a message, that Paul Ryan is vulnerable and can be defeated, and perhaps the Dems will find a stronger candidate next time around.

This has to be the goal is "hopeless" districts, to tear down the Rethug incumbent's facade of invinicibility.

The Clintons are corrupt selfish race baiting zero character scumbags. I'd rather be run over by a tractor-trailer than willfully vote for any Clinton again.

It would take a historic Democratic wave (and some money for the Democratic nominee) to knock off Paul Ryan this year.  If we never challenge him, though, he gets to sit on his warchest forever.

I have relatives in this district (fortunately, I get to live in Tammy Baldwin country), and I've been following the race.  I hate to say it, but this one is a prime example of the Democratic establishment being largely clueless about how to run in primarily rural districts, and showing no great interest in doing so.  Kudos to these candidates for stepping up.  Find your OWN voice and your OWN message, forget the Democratic consultants, and you'll do Wisconsin's progressive tradition proud.  Maybe next time, the 50-state strategy will reach into SE Wisconsin....

        •  Put in a good word with your relatives (0+ / 0-)

I hope you'll talk with your relatives about the race if they have any Democratic tendencies (especially if you think Steve Herr is the best of the bunch).  At least, please tell them to vote for anyone but Jeff Thomas!

  •  Good Luck (0+ / 0-)

I used to live in the district, and I was interested in the article this morning. Steven Herr seemed to be my favorite, from what I read. Ill follow up a little more. It would be great to get rid of Ryan!

    •  Check the websites (0+ / 0-)

Steven Herr's campaign is by far the most professional, which is readily apparent by checking the websites.  Since he is a small business owner and therefore his own boss, he also has alot of time to dedicate to the race.  He is part of the DailyKos community and a strong progressive as well.

Sensenbrenner needs to be shown his walking papers too, and Bryan Kennedy is a good guy, but the 5th district is alot worse for Democrats than the 1st.
