I know y'all are going to think I am crazy, but I honestly believe Democrats should welcome a Judge Roy Moore candidacy in Alabama either for Governor, or Senate when the next available term is. I don't know if he would challenge Dick Shelby or not.
I have reasons for this. I personally think that Judge Moore is appalling. How can a federal judge, who violates orders from another, expect his own orders to be obeyed? But that's another matter.
Suppose both Moore and Siegleman were to challenge Riley in AL? It's a win either way for the Democratic party. Since 9/11, the Democratic argument that the Republican party is full of extremists, is controlled by extremists, has been muted due to the atrocity of 9/11. If Moore runs against Riley and Siegleman does too, there are two very possible scenarios, both winnable ones for the Democratic Party. Moore could take the conservative Christian vote, Riley, whatever's left of the Republicans, which could easily throw the election to Siegelman. Or, Moore could win. That way, he is Governor of a State. What is the first thing he would do? Try the monument again.
This was such a public relations disaster for the GOP that neither Bush, his staff, nor even Republican leaders in AL, were willing to support it. If he is all over TV again, as the leader of the Alabama GOP, the picture again gets painted, the GOP is nothing short of overwhelmed by rabid batshit right wingers. They lose independents and moderates. Say what you guys want, I would LOVE to see a Moore candidacy. All he will do if elected, is break laws to put the monument up where it shouldn't be. He will be dragged to court, possibly removed from office, and the GOP has a bad scandal on it's hands, for the entire country to see. I'm willing to bet many people didn't care as much about it last time. Oh big deal, an Alabama Supreme Court justice. When they see a Governor, or a Senator, plaqued with scandal, that turns into a media frenzy 20 times what we saw in Montgomery. We should all be rooting for a Moore candidacy. The very least it will do is elect a Democrat back to office in a solid red state. The best it could do is hand the GOP a scandal for which there is no way out. That could mean an easy ticket BACK to Congressional Control, majority of governorships, and most importantly, in the eyes of the media, the GOP wounded. What do you think?
