Election 2006 Theme Song? +poll

Thu Aug 03, 2006 at 07:44:28 PM PDT

Presidential campaigns always have theme songs, like Clinton's "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow," and Kerry's - what the hell was his anyway?  Hmm.

But what about midterm elections?  We need a campaign anthem, something to put the wind at our backs as we're out there working to reclaim our government from the neocons and theocrats.

Here are some possibilities:

(1) Carly Simon - "Turn of the Tide"
(2) Tom Petty - "I Won't Back Down"
(3) Barry Manilow - "I Made It Through the Rain"
(4) Stevie Wonder - "You Haven't Done Nothing"
(5) Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A.

I've included lyric excerpts under the fold...  vote for your favorite!

(1) Carly Simon - "Turn of the Tide"

Not very well known, but could the words be any more apt?

How can we know
The fate of the earth
Must everything go
From bad to worse

How can we be
Just along for the ride
We'd rather believe
That we decide

That we can stand here
And say loud and clear
Here comes the turn of the tide

Here comes the turn
Here comes the turn
Here comes the turn of the tide

We cannot go on
Sounding alarms
And rattling swords
And building bombs
And fouling the air
And the streams underground
We've got to begin to turn it around

It's our right to be heard
Our right to decide
Here comes the turn of the tide
....

(2) Tom Petty - "I Won't Back Down"

This played at the Murtha rally today.  Rockin'.

Well I won't back down, no I won't back down
you could stand me up at the gates of hell
but I won't back down

Gonna stand my ground, won't be turned around
and I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
gonna stand my ground and I won't back down

Chorus
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
hey I will stand my ground
and I won't back down

(3) Barry Manilow - "I Made It Through the Rain"

A little sappy, but this is nice for our victory celebrations.

We dreamers have our ways
Of facing rainy days
And somehow we survive
We keep the feelings warm
Protect them from the storm
Until our time arrives
Then one day the sun appears
And we come shining through those lonely years

I made it through the rain
I kept my world protected
I made it through the rain
I kept my point of view
I made it through the rain

And found myself respected
By the others who
Got rained on too
And made it through...

(4) Stevie Wonder - "You Haven't Done Nothing"

Stevie wrote this for Tricky Dick, but it applies equally well 30 years later to Talent, Santorum, Dewine, Chafee, etc...

We are amazed but not amused
By all the things you say that you'll do
Though much concerned but not involved
With decisions that are made by you

But we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Telling how you are gonna change right from wrong
'Cause if you really want to hear our views
"You haven't done nothing"!

...

(5) Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A.

Sure it's overplayed -- but do people even realize it's a protest song?

I got in a little hometown jam
And so they put a rifle in my hands
Sent me off to Vietnam
To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says "Son if it was up to me"
I go down to see the V.A. man
He said "Son don't you understand"...

And when you run it on ads, you use Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, John Cougar Mellencamp, Elvis, and Frank Sinatra's version in the background.

I always wanted to use "Renegades of Funk", "The Time Has Come Today", and "Leash" (Pearl Jam) as campaign songs. But they problably wouldn't fly for all age brackets or regions.

Therefore, the theme should be "You are my Sunshine"

    The truth starts with you

Don't Let It Bring You Down
    Neil Young

    Old man lying
by the side of the road
    With the lorries rolling by.
    Blue moon sinking
from the weight of the load
And the buildings scrape the sky.
    Cold wind whipping
    down the alley at dawn
    And the morning paper flies.
    Dead man lying
by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.

Don't let it bring you down
    It's only castles burning,
    Find someone who's turning
    And you will come around.

    Blind man running
through the light of the night
With an answer in his hand.
Come on down to the river of sight
    And you can really understand.
    Red lights flashing
through the window in the rain,
Can you hear the sirens moan?
    White cane lying
in a gutter in the lane,
    If you're walking home alone.

Don't let it bring you down
    It's only castles burning,
    Just find someone who's turning
    And you will come around.

Don't let it bring you down
    It's only castles burning,
    Just find someone who's turning
    And you will come around.

This is an election ... not an auction.

  •  'Escape,' by Journey (0+ / 0-)

    (Perry/Schon/Cain)
from the albumof the same name

    First verse:

He's just a young boy out of school
Livin' his world like he wants to
They're makin' laws, but they don't understand
Turns a boy into a fightin' man
    They won't take me
    They won't break me
No one could tell him what to do
Had to learn everything the hard way
He's on the street, breakin' all the rules
    I'm tellin' you that he's nobody's fool
    They won't take me
    They won't break me

    Full lyrics here.

    This is my escape
    Yes, I'm on my way

As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

"Wake Up" by Rage Against the Machine
and of course "Know Your Enemy" again by Rage

For some reason I don't think any campaign will use these songs :(

Oh and this is my first post.

    The Revolution Starts Now

I was walkin’ down the street
In the town where I was born
I was movin’ to a beat
    That I’d never felt before
So I opened up my eyes
And I took a look around
I saw it written ‘cross the sky
    The revolution starts now
    Yeah, the revolution starts now

    The revolution starts now
When you rise above your fear
And tear the walls around you down
    The revolution starts here
Where you work and where you play
Where you lay your money down
What you do and what you say
    The revolution starts now
    Yeah the revolution starts now

    Yeah the revolution starts now
    In your own backyard
    In your own hometown
So what you doin’ standin’ around?
    Just follow your heart
    The revolution starts now

Last night I had a dream
That the world had turned around
And all our hopes had come to be
    And the people gathered ‘round
They all brought what they could bring
    And nobody went without
And I learned a song to sing
    The revolution starts now

The lesson of that history is that you must not despair, that if you are right, and you persist, things will change. -Howard Zinn

Your Life is Now by John Mellencamp

This was one of the songs Edwards used on the campaign trail and I remember when it started playing when he walked in the room...everyone went wild.

See the moon roll across the stars
See the seasons turn like a heart
Your fathers days are lost to you
This is your time here to do what you will do

    Chorus:
Your life is now your life is now your life is now
    In this undiscovered moment
Lift your head up above the crowd
    We could shake this world
If you would only show us how
    Your life is now

Would you teach your children to tell the truth
Would you take the high road if you could choose
Do you believe youre a victim of a great compromise
cause I believe you could change your mind and change our lives

    Chorus:
Your life is now your life is now your life is now
    In this undiscovered moment
Lift your head up above the crowd
    We could shake this world
If you would only show us how
    Your life is now

Would you teach your children to tell the truth
This is your time here to do what you will do

    Chorus:
Your life is now your life is now your life is now
    In this undiscovered moment
Lift your head up above the crowd
    We could shake this world
If you would only show us how
    Your life is now

Your life is now your life is now your life is now
    In this undiscovered moment
Lift your head up above the crowd
    We could shake this world
If you would only show us how
    Your life is now
