Austin Kos Meeting Sunday--Become a Voter Registrar!

Tue Aug 08, 2006 at 12:56:07 PM PDT

(cross-posted at Texas Kaos) This is where the rubber meets the road, folks.  It's time for another get-together of Central Texas Kos members.  This Sunday will be a critical meeting as we'll have Bruce Elfant in attendance to train and swear-in all those wishing to become deputy voter registrars for Travis County.  We've promised him 10-15 new deputies, based on our average turnout these last few meetings, so bring us your bodies and get into this fight.  Sccs and I already got deputized and it didn't hurt a bit!
We've decided to keep meeting at the Dog and Duck for the time being, at 1pm-4pm, but come prepared to sit outdoors in case the large indoor area is taken when we arrive.  The outside has misters, so it's not bad for even the dainty petunias among us.  Besides, it's a pub and they compensate for the heat with cold beer and a fine quality BLT.

We'll be getting our training at 1pm (please try to be prompt because we're getting the clerk there on a Sunday out of the goodness of his heart) and then discussing the potential events/venues for our first registration drive.  If you know of any upcoming events or busy venues that would be ripe for signing up new voters, please bring specific information with you to this meeting.  True Blue Travis will be having coordinated registration drives which you can then participate in, or we can go as our own Kos group, or hell, you can go door to door in your neighborhood and register people by yourself.  Prolly more fun to go with others, though.

The last possible day to register to vote for this November's election is October 10.  As I said in my last diary, I'd love for our group to be able to sign up 1000 new voters in Travis.  If this seems like it wouldn't make much of a difference, consider that State Representative Mark Strama beat out Repub incumbent Jack Stick by only 500 votes, in a majority red district.  We can make a difference.  Every race, every vote, every district will be crucial not only this year, but in 2008 as well.  Let's lay the groundwork now and be prepared for the big battles ahead.

If you'll be in attendance, post below.  Bruce has asked for a rough head count so that he can prepare materials to bring.  See you all there!
