After the Lamont Victory

Wed Aug 09, 2006 at 07:58:51 AM PDT

Okay, so many Kossacks, including me, are rejoicing about Ned Lamont's victory over Joe Lieberman last night.

Now it's time to move on.  We Kossacks have bigger fish to fry.  The Lamont battle was a battle between two Democrats.  Now let's concentrate on the biggest problem of all -- the Republicans.

That Republicans control the White House, hold over 230 seats in a 435 member House, and hold 55 Senate seats out of 100 is the biggest problem of all.  Rick Santorum and Conrad Burns continue to embarrass the people of the states they represent.  So does George Allen (my Senator), who has presidential ambitions of his own.  Jim Talent, Jim Ensign, and Jon Kyl continue to rubber stamp this President, as do most House Republicans.  We cannot even get a clean (upperdown) vote on an increase in the federal minimum wage in the House.

We need a majority of Democrats in the House to let John Conyers conduct thorough oversight hearings on the treatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay.  We need at least 51 Democrats in the Senate so that Justice Stevens, 86, if he retires before 2009, is not replaced by Michael Luttig, Edith Jones, or Emilio Garza.  We need a majority in the House so that Charlie Rangel can get tax policy enacted that reverses some of the enacted tax cuts.  We need a majority in the Senate so that Pat Leahy can subpoena documents on the Bush domestic eavesdropping program.  In short, Democrats need to regain control of both houses of Congress.  That's our goal, and we must keep our eyes on that goal.
