Markos in Wired! (w/ Poll)

I guess I am easily excited, but this morning when I opened my new issue of Wired, guess who I should see smiling up at me from the index but our Markos!

I know, Markos has been on TV, in Newsweek and other news magazines and papers and on cable and NPR, which, yeah, thats cool.  But if you end up in the pages of Wired, then you have really made it!

He earned four pages, one dedicated to his smiling mug.  The article was written by Ana Marie Cox and focused on Markos' current/near future projects, including SportsBlogs Nation and secular "mega-churches" for liberals in the Midwest.

Maybe I feel a bit protective of our dear blog-father but I felt that Wonkette was a bit catty toward Markos simply to demark the diference between a "real writer" (herself) and the "outrageous" and scruffy techopreneur (Markos).

Anyhoo, congratulations Markos!

•  Wired - that is sooooo cool

  I am a complete technology fraud.  When I chaired a working group in the City on the internet and banking ten years ago I had never been online, never seen a webpage.  My husband knew what I fraud I was, and he had been on the internet since 1979.  He read Wired in bed.

  So I began prepping for my working group by reading Wired the morning before it met, picking up buzzwords and trends, and dropping them in during the discussions.  I wrote the report summarising what the 16 really smart people on my working group concluded about the internet having still never been online.

  Fast forward three months.  The think tank that published the working group report has a reception for its release.  My husband accompanies me.  The very first person I'm introduced to on arrival is a founder/editor of Wired.  He grabs my hand and says, "[LondonYank], you are an I.T. god-dess!"

  I think that that moment was the beginning of the end of my marriage.  My husband never recovered.

    I had done statistical analysis during grad school by handing boxes of cards to geeks in the computer center and waiting to be told the analysis was done.  Or, that the cards had been shredded in the reader and needed to be repunched...

    I got one of the first PC's because my son worked for IBM.  I got one of the first 10mb hard disk machines for the same reason.

    I struggled to learn to use it.

    Rewind:  I was offered a teaching position in a large eastern city.  It didn't pay much so I arranged to get a "real" job with a city agency.  Innocent of all understanding, I accepted a job with the title of Director of MIS.

    Turned out I was supposed to organize, update, and run a computer system that controlled the whole agency.

    Long short, I did.

    My husband, one of the true wizards in the industry, has never forgiven me for not "putting in my time" and "joining the priesthood of assembly language programmers".  We never discuss it.  <g>
