It's Fashion Wednesday again, all you Project Runway junkies!
Are you in, or are you out?
Come with me now and explore the Pantone Fashion Color Report for Fall 2006...
Update: Oops, I posted it an hour early! Oh well, last week's rerun is on right now, and the true junkie would have their eyeballs plastered to the TV RIGHT NOW.
Have you ever wondered who really dictates that "Pink is the new Black?" As much as it may sometimes seem otherwise, it's not evil wallet gnomes hellbent on relieving you of your dollars. The real culprits are the folks over at
Pantone who release their
color forecasts twice a year for the following fall and spring seasons.
Pink is not the new black, by the way. After enjoying several years at the top of the heap, most of the pinks disappeared last fall. Alas, poor pink, you have been thrown over for blue! So what is the new black for this fall? Let's consult the Fashion Color Report for Fall 2006:

It's a season dominated by warm colors. Even the ostensibly cooler purple and blue are muted, rich but soft. This is definitely a comfort-oriented palette, with only two significantly contrasting (complementary) pairs:
and
I'm a big fan of the blue/orange contrast in decor, thought not so much in clothing. The purple and apple cinnamon (otherwise known in my mind as "baby poop") I could do without. These are kind of colors I prefer to combine in more monochromatic or analogous ways. Like, say...

To me, this palette says we are culturally starved for comfort and warmth. Rather than seeking excitement and adventure, we're quite over-stimulated enough with our world in political, social, and economic chaos and uncertainty. We want to curl up with a blanket and a cup of cocoa and imagine a simpler (and probably richer) existence than we're currently able to afford.
What does this palette say to you?
