Labor Day (and Birthday) Cheers and Jeers!

There will be no confusing this with Bill in Portland Maines "Cheers and Jeers." Really.

What I'd like for my birthday is to tell all my friends how much they mean to me, and for them to tell all their friends and family how much they mean to them.

I'd also like landslide victories in November too enormous for any amount of dirty election tricks to cover up ...

oh ... and world peace.

I had this all planned out. I was going to do a huge, photo filled C&J ... and then they went and changed the image posting rules.

I might burn up my entire months photobucket allotment with this one diary.

        •  A generous friend of mine has several trees

          and she shares with me.  I mostly squeeze them and freeze the juice and use it for a special ranch salad dressing I make all the time.

          I don't cook, much, so no recipe, but I'll see if I can get the recipe from the chef, who I know.  It's his mother's recipe and he is damn proud of it, as he should be.  It's knock out good.  Mr. Meerkat and I usually indulge no more than three or four times a year, sharing a slice because it is super rich.  It's worth the wait.

          I think the meyers are in season in the spring here, but we generally can get them for about six months of the year.  They're available now, I think.

    I hadn't seen him in action before.  His style is quite effective.  I loved, loved, loved the way he dealt with the Man-on-dog's rantings.  He remained calm and detached, allowing little Ricky to wind himself up like a top.  It was almost a comedy routine.

  On this Labor Day, I want to tip my hat to Ernest Patterson, a Marxist professor who taught economics at Davidson College, a small liberal arts college in the heart of the South.  (I don't know that he did but I would not be surprised if Tony Snow took a course with Red Ernie.)

  I learned more from "Red Ernie" about the organized labor movement in this country in a semester than I would ever learn in a lifetime outside his course.

  He was also one of those rare teachers who offered his students the skills to forever look at the world and from a different--and critical--perspective. Our required daily pre-class reading was the Wall Street Journal and we were subject to a pop quiz on anything about that day's edition. Sometimes the subject might be his own LTE that seem to get published frequently.

  Most memorable was a quiz about a WSJ ad featuring a pig, followed by a subsequent lesson about the effects on our economy by the displacement of small farmers by large, corporate growers and the role of government subsidies. (The ad was timed with a pitch to Congress for an increase in subsidies. I also learned to look at the role of the ads in a different light.) That was 30+ years ago and recently I saw a DailyKos article touching on the same subject. Still. Red Ernie was timeless.

  We all have had such teachers. On this Labor Day, Cheers to Red Ernie for teaching generations of students about the true meaning of Labor Day.

Heh.

    Of course, if we were to do quizzes consistent with our professions, Robyn might make you do a computer graphic of the song, and I would ask you to list the sources you used to find the lyrics, and as a law librarian, I might ask you to figure out who has the copyright to the piece -- the original poet or the person who turned it into a song.
