Will Jim Leach finally be retired?

Thu Sep 07, 2006 at 06:58:31 PM PDT

Is it possible that one of the most progressive districts in the country will finally get a Progressive Democrat to be its representative in Congress? Well, finally, the answer is looking like a big "YES, YES, YES"
Jim Leach has represented Iowa-02 for a long time, 30 years to be exact. You know, since people were still playing records and tapes and phones were still attached to a wire in the wall. I think computers were still a dream back when Leach won his first election in 1976.
And in 30 years Leach has had a few good moments, most of them early. He has cast himself as a "moderate" and as such has been of little use to the ultra right wing that has led the Republicants for more than a decade.
Leach does have a working agreement with them. On tight votes his vote is solid Republicant. In exchange he is allowed to throw out a liberal vote or two to play to the folks back home. The original "catch and release" Republicant.
It is finally catching up to him. And helping folks understand how Leach has been playing this game is Dave Loebsack. Dave Loebsack is Leach's opponent and a long time activist. Dave is a professor of political science and a very proud beneficiary of Democratic programs  that allowed him to become a life success.
So yesterday a new poll came out that shows Dave is in a very good position to finally put Jim Leach out to pasture! When Dave wins in November media around the country will hail this as one of the biggest upsets of the election season.
Dave is out every day from sunup to sundown and beyond shaking hands and passionately telling the story of how government once good has gone bad.
Dave has done this mostly out of the media spotlight, making this even more improbable. I am so excited!
Dave could use some help if you would like to. Here is his website:

Or just wish him your best in his Quixotic effort.
Here are a couple of key excerpts from an extended story I received via email:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:

The environment in Iowa 2 appears to track with the national trends favoring
Democrats, especially challengers against incumbents. Thirty-year incumbent
Jim Leach has only a 38% re-elect, in a district he won with 59% in 2004, and
52% in 2002. He also has an upside down job approval rating, 42-49. In an
initial head-to-head with Democratic challenger Dave Loebsack, a professor at
Cornell College, in Mt. Vernon Iowa, making his first run for office, Leach is
held to 47%, with 53% either choosing Loebsack or uncertain between the two.
Following a paragraph of biographical and issue information about Loebsack,
the ballot test swings widely, with Loebsack on top, 51%-28%.

This test was run after providing one paragraph of information about
Democratic
challenger Dave Loebsack to the respondent.

I've been following Loebsack more and more.  I live in this district and thought there was not a chance for him at the beginning, but his walking tour -- he's going town to town throughout the district -- is very cool.  His website is full of earthy pictures of Dave talking to normal people.

Congressman Leach is a good man and walks a tightrope in a liberal district.  However, his time has come.  We need every liberal voice we can and Congressman Leach has hitched his horse to the wrong cart.

Dave Loebsack is clearly an intelligent, thoughtful person who would be a great representative for the district.

And he would vote our way in the tough races.

He's got my vote and I'm not going to make a secret of that!

but I will gladly take it all back if he pulls this off.  Leach has served on borrowed time for too long.

Hope he wins..What are the ratings on this matchup?  Is it a toss up? slightly leaning toward leach?..Has loessak gone on air?..any internal polling?

We cant get excited untill we see something that actually says this district is very close..Untill then, leach has to be assumed to have a double digit lead.

Leach was the first Congressman to flog the Whitewater non-scandal; making a series of lying Special Order speeches wholly designed, in my view, to smear President Clinton for losing money on a failed land deal.  I can still remember watching him on C-SPAN completely lose all credibility whatsoever.  He then held hearings on the matter, which were biased, slanted, non-factual and utterly ridiculous.  I wrote him a nice respectful letter questioning his behavior and never got a response.

He backed off (a little) from that insane behavior for awhile, but it didn't matter because others took his lead and ran with it...leading, ultimately, to Ken Starr.

Prior to that, I believed that he was a decent Congressman, for a Republican.

I sure hope the Democrat wins big!

  •  IA-2 and IA-4 May Get on the Map (3+ / 0-)

With yesterday's polling showing that Democrats Braley (IA-1, competing for Nussle's old seat) and Boswell (IA-3 incumbent)in very comfortable positions (both at 54% in independent polls), attention should focus more on Loebsack's and Spencer's races (Iowa's 4th Congressional District, mostly north-central Iowa).

Both are progressives going against long-time Republican incumbents, which should make them long shots. But this is not a typical election year. If the planets line up correctly, we could have 4 Democratic congressmen from Iowa in 2007 instead of 1.

Loebsack's polling did not indicate that the race was close, but it shows an opening.  Spencer does not have polling data yet, but I am hopeful that there will be some good numbers in a week or so.

By the way, check out the blogs from Afghanistan from Dr. Selden Spencer (SpencerforCongress.com).  He is stil over there and is sending back some very interesting stories. He should really have a terrific story to tell on September 11th, his first public appearance since his medical work in Kabul began 2 weeks ago.

He moved away from Davenport at the last redistricting, leaving us to Nussle. Six years tops in IA-2.
