What's Your Fucking Problem? Inspiration edition. (WYFP!)

** Won't you please share the joy of WYFP by recommending?

WYFP is our community's Saturday evening gathering to talk about our problems, empathize with one another, and perhaps share advice. Everyone and all sorts of troubles are welcome. May we find peace and healing here. :-)

Spent the day at Fighting Bob Fest at the Baraboo, Wisconsin County Fairgrounds, with fellow kossacks EconAtheist and OrangeClouds. This is a great annual event, a progressive "chautauqua" with excellent speakers and a relaxed, folksy atmosphere. It was unseasonably nippy, but it didn't rain on us. The highlights, to me, were the speeches by 96 year old Doris "Granny D" Haddock and independent journalist Amy Goodman--both of them awesomely strong, brilliant, passionate, prophetic women. Granny D's speech was a rare and stirring masterpiece of rhetoric by a woman weakening in body but clearly not in any other way. Amy's was... well, you probably know she's pretty intense--she makes you contemplate the stark suffering there is in the world. It's a challenge to do something about it.

Who's inspired you lately? What's humbled you and made you sit back and think? What suffering are you present to today?

P.S. for Madison Wisconsin kossacks: there will be a kossack meetup here on Wednesday at 6:30 PM for dinner at the Old Fashioned on Capitol Square on Pinckney. There will be several of us there including cskendrick who is in the process of moving to Madison.     This week, this year, the past 6 years have taken their toll.

    I'm not as young as I used to be when I was out almost every weekend protesting the Vietnam War.

    But I have more at stake now; kids of draftable age, their futures (which I had hoped would have been more peaceful than mine has been), future grandkids.

    Back then, I marched and was tear-gassed to save my peers; now I protest to save the children - all of them.

    No wonder I'm tired. I've been protesting most of my life.

  Living in a country held hostage by greedy, lying, war-mongering bastards who apparently still have not hi-jacked a sufficient share of the wealth and apparently intend to continue their dirty, inhumane tricks until they it all.  In the meantime, we the people are stressed, tired, cranky, fearful, nervous, paranoid, easily distracted, unable to maintain focus, worried, afraid that the worst has not happened yet and is coming, but we don’t know when and we don’t know how and we don’t know in what form.  It's not a good thing.

    That and I have got to get out of the job I'm in, which  is a) beyond stressful and b) involves editing and writing text that is DOA.  And did I mention beyond stressful? My hair is falling out, my blood pressure is up, I have a cold every weekend, I am barely available to my child and husband, the apartment is trashed, my friendships are essentially nonexistent. Aggggggghhhhh.

    VM, on a lighter note, did your downstairs neighbor stop running his bathroom fan all night? (That was you, wasn't it?)

      Not an editor (Are you kidding? Sample my posts, I'd get fired in less than a day ;-) but also trapped in a job I hate.  I suspect there's tons of us what with employers feeling free to abuse workers and employees trapped in jobs they hate to get the health insurance.

      We really, really gotta fix this health insurance business -- I think we'd all feel more free to take career risks if we didn't have our health insurance tied to our jobs.

      I agree, the job is the primary problem, sapping your life of any joy, leaving you open to all sorts of stress-induced ailments.  In the meantime, how about a spa treatment, a full sweep house-cleaning service, and a weekend away.  I know, if you could, you would.

      On my front, good news.  He was here only temporarily (now living in Hawaii) preparing the place as a rental (oh joy, more subject matter for future WYFP's).  After leaving the fan on for about six nights in a row (I'm convinced it was to provoke me), laying new carpet and refinishing his floors, he departed. It's been blissfully quiet since, and I'm enjoying it while I can.

        i happened to be on the roof of the place i am working on when the shuttle was launched. titusville is the closest town to the launch pad to begin with, so seeing it on the roof was great. don't know why but it shaked rattled and rolled a LOT more than usual. for those who have never seen a shuttle launch, skip that lying disney crappola and see a launch instead. i have seen quite a few but i am always awed by the sheer power they have.
         no matter what you plan to see here in florida, just make sure you skip all that is disney, they suck big time.

        I'm trying to get away with just my husband for Columbus Day weekend - if we can bring it off it'll be our first 2 consecutive nights alone since before our son was born (his 9th b'day is coming up)!

        And I have started sending out emails to people I've been out of touch with, to see what they know, who they know - don't expect it to immediately bear fruit, but hope it'll get me started. Have been way too stuck and I must sound like a broken record to those nearest and dearest. So - two meetings on Monday afternoon!

        liberally even.

        Occasionally I eat the food but usually don't want to spend the money.

        You don't need to drink and a lot of them are in places that allow children (mine does).

        You also don't have to talk politics but it's nice knowing if you do it will be with a like-minded intelligent (cause we all are) person.

        And if you don't have a Drinking Liberally in your area, you can start one. Elise (and her sister) just did and had her first meeting last Thursday.

        I'd like to see more in areas outside of the cities. There are people in small towns and rural areas that are desparate for others to talk to. I keep getting stopped and chatted up when I drive through small towns because people see the Kerry sticker still on my car.

            And it's incredibly spotty -- my speed is crappy and my connection is shitty as all hell.  You can forget about downloading video, for example -- and even reading BagnewsNotes is a problem, because of all the pictures.

            And it's changed my life remarkably.  I go to bed before midnight because there's nothing else to do, and then I wake up at 6-7 am.  And then -- well, I should go into work, but I've usually been hanging out and reading for a little while.

            It's great to have internet access ... but there are times I wish I could meter it, or at least make myself get kicked off at midnight.

      I'm so damned stressed out that I don't know what to do. I'm really having to fight myself to stay sober, cause this is the type of thing that could really drive me to drinking, heavily and often.

        to stay sober.  If you pick up then your marriage will be in far more trouble than being separated by 1000 miles.  Reach out to friends, get to more meetings, don't spend too much time in your head--all of the things you had to do to get sober you just have to do again.  It's like putting yourself in the intensive care unit for a while.  Feel free to email me as well.  I'm on the other coast so I'm up early.  Hang in there.  The circumstances really suck but polluting your life by picking up won't help at all.

          have never had trouble controlling my drinking, but my genetics worry me. I've got one grandfather who was an alcoholic for most of his life, and my biological father and my mom's mom were "functional alcoholics". Meaning they drank constantly, but never to the point of getting drunk. They'd each go through a case or so of beer a day. My brother and sister have both had drinking and drug problems. I had serious drug problems in my mid-teens.

          Considering this history, and considering that there is evidence that it is heriditary, I've always been really cautious. But, high levels of stress make it really hard. I've been known to get really really drunk once or twice a year, but mostly limit myself to two or three drinks each night on the weekend. I just don't wanna go down the same path as others in my family.

            Alcohol addiction is as much of a drug addiction as anything else, so it is so wise of you to avoid depending on it.

            I feel for you - my husband and I have spent a good part of our marriage wondering where we'd be going next and when the answer would come - he spent 20 years in the military, and surprise! once he retired, his civilian work has kept us moving and wondering. At least you have the internet to use to find some community when you are lonely - I used to think only pathetic people wasted their time typing away to stangers, but since I have discovered dKos, I have found out what an online community really can be.  Do stop by often - it is such a constantly changing place there is always someone interesting that is posting here!! (and yes, some very funny people write here!!)

            Good luck - do NOT let circumstances get you down, you CAN be strong - you already are showing that.  Try to keep rested too!(lack of sleep can literally make you crazy!!)

        You sound really lonely. Seems pretty natural. I realize you feel lonely for your husband specifically, but being with other people, especially people you care about and/or who need your care and compassion (engaging the heart is important), will also really help. Relax your anxiety however you can, especially by trusting that your husband loves you and realizing that he may be physically apart but he is continuously a part of you and absolutely you will be together again.

        I hope you will find comfort soon, somehow.

    I'm only 500 miles away from husband and child. Believe me it sucks on your husband's end as well. He comes home and thinks he isn't necessary anymore.

    I've been putting off upgrading to XP from W2K for over a year. I don't even want to know what will completely fuck up!

    My geek friends (a group that I must admit I belong to) tell me to 1) buy a MAC with XP capability or 2) (the other camp) install Linux on my current machine.

    They know I'm a security nut and appeal to my Windows weariness.
