In my mailbox this evening was a six by nine envelope with return address "SENATOR JOHN McCAIN." Not used to getting missives from the lunatic right, I opened it. Inside was:
A petition to Senator Barbara Boxer!
Wow. A petition to Senator Boxer from a wingnut? Not only that, said wingnut (in conjunction with one Joseph Lieberman, hiss, boo) wanted Boxer to favorably view legislation on (drum roll, please) GLOBAL WARMING
(more under the flip...)
Apparently an organization named Environmental Defense Action League has tag teamed with McCain and Lieberman to push "legislation to cap and reduce global warming pollution nationwide" (I will be careful how much I quote of the contents of my 6 x 9 envelope) and wants Boxer (and others) to promote
a "bipartisan Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act."
Of course, we all know that when a Republican names a proposed enactment X, the actual effect of the enactment will be anti-X. More curious than ever, I looked up the EDA League.
This entity is a nonprofit organization, which apparently has been around for a while. Information on its intake and fundraisers can be found here: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/...
and its website here:
www.environmentaldefense.org
Their explanation of themselves:
Environmental Defense is a leading national nonprofit organization representing more than 500,000 members. Since 1967, we have linked science, economics and law to create innovative, equitable and cost-effective solutions to society's most urgent environmental problems.
A careful read through the literature in the envelope disclosed nothing about what the Climate Stewardship Act would actually do. It appears it involves some sort of pay to pollute and/or carbon dioxide credit scheme. However, without knowing the details, I cannot determine whether to be for or against. Given the identity of its proponents, I am (tentatively) against.
Anyone out there know anything about this scheme?
